Why is it accepted that laws don't apply to politicians?

It is very well known how ridiculous our laws are. In the case of auto accidents, if anyone is injured or killed the first thing cops do is arrest the other party (if there was another party involved) for rash & negligent driving. If a single car is invovled and the driver is alive, he is promptly arrested for the same. This is irrespective of whose fault it is and even before investigations start.

There were two news reports of accidents on January 22.

I am quoting from the newspapers on how the accidents happened.

    CASE 1:

A Tata Indica with 6 people on board was going from Mulund in Mumbai to somewhere in Raigad. In the wee hours, the driver tried to overtake a truck failing to see a ST bus coming from the opposite side and a head on collision happens. All 6 people in the Indica are killed. The ST BUS DRIVER is ARRESTED for rash & negligent driving.

    CASE 2:

A Shiv Sena leader is driving a Honda City back from Pune to Mumbai in the afternoon. The tyre bursts and the City flips over lands on the opposite side of the e-way and hits a Zen going towards Pune. The Shiv Sena leader has a head injury, others in the City suffer minor bruises. In the Zen, a 6 year old child is 'severly injured' while the rest are okay. The politician is admitted to the ICU in a hospital, undergoes CT scan and is being attended to by a neurosurgeon.

Logically & by the laws of our land, what should happen? He should be arrested as soon as he is discharged. The cops, normally overzealous, in accident cases in announcing arrests are maintaining a stony silence. The media, super over zealous at other times, is also quiet.

In case you think cops are being sensitive (Cops & sensitive?!) to the injured politico, lets go back to the last week of December. A NRI & his lady friend have an accident near Kala nagar Bandra. The lady is killed while the driver (Her NRI fiancee) is injured gravely. The cops announce to the media that he will be arrested as soon as he is discharged.

Seems like not only the cops but even us accept that no rules or laws apply to politicians. What is shocking is the absolute silence to the non-arrest of the politician. And mind you, he is not even a famous guy!

The question is "Who will bell the cat ?". Anybody doing so is sure to loose his/her job [a certain Kiran Bedi, Khairnar comes to mind]. Who is going to take panga with them ?
