The new Fiat Ottimo Cross has been launched on the Shanghai Auto Show in China. The Cross is a concept car previewing an upcoming crossover variant of the Fiat Ottimo hatchback. The Cross concept features a jacked-up suspension, big wheels with black arches, a loaded front bumper, and a roof rack with LED lights
The roof rack appears to be usable, and that is a good thing. Wing on the rear window, more black plastic over the doors, and shiny chromed exhaust pipes. The market for this sort of vehicles is still very strong in China, with some cross-versions even outselling the cars they are based on.The Fiat Ottimo was launched in March 2014, it is the hatchbak version of the Fiat Viaggio sedan, and both are based on the same platform as the Dodge Dart. The Ottimo is powered by a 1.4 turbo T-Jet engine in two different tunes: 120hp or 150hp, both mated to a 5-speed manual or a DCT.

It's really pity for Fiat not taking risks and still refraining from launching Viaggio based models in India

Well folks that's a looker. Look at those tail lamps and alloys this sure can give a huge complex to the Q3 out there forget the ecosport's, the duster's and the active's out there. All in all if at all they launch the million dollar question for us can they sell well in our market still remains wide open.

Could this be the 'New Avventura' planned for India in late 2016 as per their 5-year plan? Perhaps, except that this China-centric car does not yet get a diesel and is, like the Viaggio and the Ottimo there, powered by (entirely?) Indian/Ranjangaon-exported t-jet engines. As against a ckd-with-partial-localization of say the 500X, though, this car is BIG and more, er, 'macho', a prerequisite for our market.

But hell FCA, just do it! Inexpensive CKD kits of this and/or the Viaggio and the Jeep Cherokee too from China rather than Europe or America (they share platforms and a lot of architectural parts) combined with Indian-made turbopetrol and diesel engines and transmissions? Priced like a topend Duster/Terrano/XUV500 or less, if possible? After all they are presumably going to assemble their platform ('CUSW') mate, the new Cherokee, too and not just the Grand Cherokee in Ranjangaon in 2016, apparently?

Perhaps feb 2016's AutoExpo will reveal all about FCA in India? Or so one wishes.

A humble request to all contributors. Please stop posting such pictures of beautiful Fiat cars from across the globe. Feels bad that India is being given such step motherly treatment.

Ona lighter note FCA needs to fasten it seat belts and launch products agressively and get 1.6 MJD. With localisation and engine sharing with Tata/Maruti/Chevy they will be laughing all the way to bank. With plans of 2 L MJD as well things look rosy. Alas all we get it Punto and Linea only. Oh I missed Punto on steriods as well aka Avvy.

A malnourished Linea ala Classic for company as well. What the hell Fiat was thinking when launching this?

To me its looking Fiat FC90 :):) ROOF LEDS looking cool
Commn Fiat ,,, launch this anyhow ,,, CKD,BKD ,,whatsoever .
sometimes ,u have to go special way to make Brand name more appealing. Launching this would definitely help Fiat India Brand making ,people will recognize this as brand more than Punto and Lineas only. It will be well above that . No worries if it w'ld priced higher or sells less, exclusitivity is always find in premium

What a car man...we need such cars in India as soon as possible.

With new gearbox and 90HP MJD engine to cross Ottimmo will do wonders for FIAT. Stop selling Avventura and launch this as Avventura in India.

Ours only to hope and desire and dream....while FCA "follows the 5-year plan", which says (if it has not been revised) a "New Avventura" in late 2016, while all-new Punto-replacement and Linea-replacement (Grand Sienna) come if at all only in 2017.

I believe at this 'rate' us die-hard Fiat fans will need to emigrate to Turkey, which gets and will get all the best and newest Fiat, Alfa etc stuff! :p

But seriously, I am strongly hoping FCA at the AutoExpo in feb 2016 showcases not just the Jeeps, big and small, but also THAT "new Avventura".

Not as per the 'plan': the thing is that this is more d-segment-type car, though cheaper than the VW/Skoda benchmarks (Jetta and Octavia) or the Ford Focus in Europe. It is apparently engineered from the outset to also have one or perhaps two avatars for the US market (Dodge hatch version and a Chrysler 100 sedan version), or so say the 'experts' on US and Italian auto websites. In fact it will have a hatch version and a station-wagon one too in Europe (more Southern, Eastern Europe+Turkey and North Africa/Middle East than Western or Northern Europe).

i.e., the engineering specifications and materials etc will make it too expensive to compete in the C2 (Honda City-type) space in India.

Why do you feel the all-new Grand Sienna (off a new, light version of the Palio platform used for the current Indian Punto and Linea) will be inadequate: far from it!

Anyway, that's a way off, IF at all. For now FCA is/will be focussed on the Jeep launch, and the new t-jet Evo, Abarth-s, etc.

But yeah: they need to offer some 'all-new', charismatic option(s) ABOVE the Linea till the all-new Punto and the all-new Grand Sienna debut here in 2017 (IF the plan for India still holds).

Hence your point about the Ottimo Cross and/or Viaggio is totally correct. btw, the Linea-replacement for Turkey, Europe etc will only go on sale only in late 2016, overthere, so....

Plus: remember that from now on I suspect, like Ford, Nissan, VW, Chevy and Renault in India, FCA will launch NO new product here that does not have good, guaranteed export numbers, hence the focus on Jeep production and exports going forward, and it is said, exports in big numbers of the new 2017 Punto too. Currently FCA exports very few cars, mainly engines, transmissions and other in-sourced components, apparently.

But this is all at best intelligent, researched guesswork. Everything remains to be seen: the AutoExpo in feb will hopefully see them openly revealing plans and commitments, and new model(s) too, more for Jeep than for Fiat though, one suspects.

    cheers
