US engineers have developed the world’s fastest car with a top speed of an incredible 435 kilometres per hour. US firm Hennessey’s Venom GT set the new record for the fastest car in the world during a test run at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

Venom beat the previous best record of 431km/h set by Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

Venom GT is a stretched Lotus Exige with a 7.0-litre, 927kW twin-turbo V8 wedged between its axles.

No It didn't. To register it as the fastest car ever, it was supposed to do a round trip, I mean to & fro of the same route and avg. to be taken as the top speed. They say that Kennedy space research didn't allow them to complete the run (on return). So officially, it is still Veyron SS, fastest ever recorded car. Also pls note that to be recorded as the "Fastest production car ever", it needs to sell at least 30 copies, it's yet not a production car.

By the way nice choice of post :up

Will it count as a new car? It says it'll be registered as a 'modified exige'. Wondering what the record books will say..

Yes it didn't meet the criteria of Guinnees as outlined by ENKI but it did do 435kmph and that's no mean feat.

Koeniggsegg is readying the One:1 to officially take the world record by claiming 450kmph.

450kmph :-| When will these title wars ever end.

Good luck to Koeniggsegg finding a road where it can catch that kind of speed. Let along catch 450 km/hr, only to come to rest from 450 km/hr, they would require at least 1.5 kms of extra stretch even with best braking performance of the world:mrgreen:.

By the way, keeping it in the same category as of Veyron SS would be a big mistake. Reason is Veyron SS is a proper car, with windshield wipers, stereo and AC. You can catch that speed one day and take it to your office other day. However, for Venom GT, it's not even a production car. I would call the people daring to try & give them more credit than car. Let a few people buy a Venom GT, catch each one of them 400 km/hr multiple times during auto reviews without breaking-down. Only then after 3-4 yrs when all of them are intact, it will be considered somewhere close to Veyron SS.

Veyron SS is a marvelous piece of engineering. A concept of it's own, it's not only about top speed but also being daily commute. You know what i am talking about.

Agree with the above analysis by ENKI. :)

We do get carried away by seeing records being claimed like the one by Venom GT. It's not only about top speed.

You can tour the entire Europe in the Veyron sitting in the most luxurious interior doing high speeds in absolute comfort. THAT is what the Veyron is all about. The grandest of all grand tourers. Not a purpose built track weapon like the Venom. The fact that it can still beat 99% of the supercars out there while doing so in supreme comfort just brings home the point about it's engineering. It's almost 9 years old now and still so capable.

The close competitor to the Veyron in it's grand touring abilities would be the Pagani Huayra. Another example of over the top ridiculousness.

At the end of the day, it all depends on what one is looking for. If one wants to enjoy track with sonorous and melodious engines that can give goosebumps to people mile away, nothing comes close to Ferrari, A car built for not PRACTICAL but every bit of IMPRACTICAL purpose. If you don't get a Ferrari but still have the budget and same aspirations, you get a Lamborghini. Someone looking for Top speed above all else but with practicality too with enough money will go for a Bugatti obviously, won't think of a 458 Italia at all. If drop-dead gorgeous looks with screaming Italian engines but budget constraint and wants usability too (however top notch track performance is not priority), get a Maserati. If you want performance & usability on other days but should also full fill purpose of typical executive mid-size saloon, get an M5 (Artificial engine sound fed via speakers, pls don't mind:evilsmile!!). If you want Track + civilized road car but prefer to look sportier and want some thing really durable, get a Porche or GTR.

I personally is a fan of melody of Maserati and Ferrari (obviously they are fast enough too!). No one does it like they do, not even other Italian cars like Lamborghini or Pagani. They are not "LOUD" which a lot of other cars are, but "Musically LOUD". No clue how they are so good at it! I wish if I could ever hear a Ferrari in real life than just on Youtube videos:A
