Back from Pune-Goa-Pune trip Dec 2014. I would like to share my experience of route and my punto. My friend has been to Goa by car some 5-6 months back so he suggested me route to Goa as Pune-Sankeshwar- Kohlapur- Ajara- Amboli- Sawantwadi- Goa. Road till Ajara is very good bad in some patches but overall very good. But road of Amboli Ghat was awful. I will not recommend it. And people in tbhp have mentioned that road of amboli is very congested during weekends so avoid taking that route in weekends. Left from Pune at 8AM and reached south goa at 8PM. I stayed at palolim beach as i wanted cool place. North Goa is quite crowded i feel(different people have different opinions). We stayed there at Beach huts which cost us 1500 per day(due to peak season in Goa else its cheaper). Advantage of beach huts are come out of huts and you can see and feel the beach. Its very good experience and one should have it once. We stayed there for 4 days.
During return i preferred different route I took the Chorla route for return journey (South Goa- Madgaon- Piranwadi cross- Belgaum- Kolhapur- Pune. This is a fantastic drive - superb roads, scenic surroundings, very less traffic. Esp. roads on Karnataka side are commendable. Roads on Goa side are good but not as much as KA. I loved driving punto on chorla ghat. While going on Chorla Ghat ensure your fuel tank is filled as no pumps are available on Ghat roads as its an sanctuary area. Also there wont be mobile network so ensure GPS is on in advance.
My recommendation would be Chorla route for Goa.l.

Regarding food stops my recommendations - Annapurna in Karad, Suruchi or Adarsha Palace in Belgaum, Vitthal Kamat in Amboli and ofcourse Opal in Kolhapur.

Overall, a great trip. Goa road-trip was on my agenda for a long time. Target accomplished

    Sounds like a nice trip!
Next time you visit Goa you can also try a new route Pune-Kolhapur-Belagaum-Chorla-Goa. This is a very nice route and has no bad roads at all!

You can try Padma Guest house for food in Kolhapur. Their mutton pickle is a specialty item
