Tata Motors is all set to inaugurate its first Land Rover plant in India on May 11. The Pune plant will be used to assemble Rover's popular 'Freelander' brand, reports CNBC-TV18's Swati Khandelwal Jain quoting sources familiar to the development.

The rationale behind the move, sources say, is to bring down the cost of the Freelander, which is currently being imported at Rs 33.5 lakh. This seems to be good news for consumers as assembling the car via the completely-knocked down (CKD) kits route will bring down the cost.

This is just a first of the products that will be locally assembled and there is a bright possibility that the other Land Rover products like the Freelander 2 may also be assembled here via the CKD route. Even Jaguar may be a possibility in the distant future.

This Pimpri facility, which was essentially being used by Mercedes, will have a production capacity of about 3,000-3,500 units per year, on a single-shift basis.

Sources also inform that Tata Motors, which has promised and planned to spend almost 1 billion euros a year on JLR’s R&D activities, is possibly looking at raising funds on the London Stock Exchange, which could be in the form of an initial public offer (IPO) for JLR.
