The Suzuki S-Cross crossover concept that was showcased at last year’s Paris Motor Show could become production real by the end of 2013, with a Frankfurt unveil likely. The S-Cross crossover production version is expected to sit between the SX4 crossover and the Grand Vitara SUV in Suzuki’s global product line up. This also means that the S-Cross crossover is expected to be positioned in the C-Segment space, rubbing shoulders with the likes of the Mahindra XUV500 crossover. An Indian launch for the Suzuki S-Cross is something that remains unclear at this point in time.

In India, Suzuki, through Maruti Suzuki, hasn’t been able to successfully sell any car north of the INR 10 lakh mark and this factor could be playing in the heads of decision makers at Suzuki. That said, the S-Cross has a much better chance of being successful in a market like India as both petrol and turbo diesel engines are expected to be offered on the global models of the S-Cross crossover. Expect Suzuki to use a 2 Liter petrol engine and the 1.9 Liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engines for powering the S-Cross crossover. Suzuki already uses the 1.9 Liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engine on the UK-spec Grand Vitara SUV.

The S-Cross will be positioned as a crossover that offers the handling characteristics of a sedan and the ground clearance of an SUV. Front wheel drive and all wheel drive options are expected to be offered on Suzuki’s latest crossover while manual and automatic gearbox options could make it to the variant line up. The S-Cross will be capable of seating five adults, making it a rival to the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and the Peugeot 3008 crossovers that are sold in Europe. Coming to the Indian angle of things, while the S-Cross isn’t yet green lighted for India, Maruti Suzuki will get into the compact SUV space in 2014.

The Maruti Suzuki XA-Alpha compact SUV, that was first showcased during the 2012 Indian Auto Expo, is expected to hit production in 2014. The XA-Alpha could be the next generation Jimny and if that happens, expect the compact SUV to be sold in many more car markets along with India. Both petrol and turbo diesel engines are expected to be made available on the Xa-Alpha compact SUV. We expect Maruti Suzuki to use the 1.3 Liter Fiat Multijet diesel motor for the diesel-happy Indian car market.

If this is really true, I guess we can abandon all hopes of seeing the 1.9 MJD in FIAT cars in India.

I doubt it Sir. Why will FIAT want to throw business away? Also, the UK Spec Suzuki Grand Vitara already uses the 1.9 MJD
