    The Gurudongmar Lake

-5 Degree C temperature, almost 17,500 feet altitude, strong chilling winds = not advisable to stay for more than 15-20-or 30 minutes there if you’ve family / kids with you. Had they not been with me there, I would have explored it further by staying there for longer time.
We would have reached the lake at about 8.30 am

Not really….but somewhat related. Precautions taken like gulping a Diamox tab daily helped – none of us had any breathing issue. However, after 10 minutes, my son started saying that he is not feeling quite comfortable, he couldn’t say what is troubling but just uncomfortable. My daughter who is quite bubbly otherwise was also in her shell somehow. Instead of her usual self of clicking infinite snaps of nature, she confined herself to the car after 10-15 minutes alongwith my wife and son. There were no breathing issue complaint from any of us but it raised my antenna and as a precaution, I decided to leave from there after about 20 minutes in total.

About 3-4 kms down from the lake, there is an army canteen where I had delicious fresh hot Samosa and Tea. Heavy cold, early rise at 2.45 am, being at very high altitude for 20 minutes seem to have made my family a bit tired. We decided to skip Chopta Valley – in fact, we started on a diversion to Chopta Valley and then took a U turn back after 5 minutes deciding against going there.

IIRC, we reached Lachen Hotel at about 12 noon. We packed our stuff, had lunch at Hotel and left for Lachung at about 1.30 pm

Great captures @VahanPujari. The view is really breathtaking! Literally too! As I understand, it may be the lack of enough oxygen that affects the brain and we feel the way you mentioned. Some may have better resistance to this. I have seen effect of oxygen rarity at 14000 ft on some co-trekkers during my SarPass trek in Himachal Pradesh with Youth Hostel Ass. programme 10 years ago. Though, during trekking, it is imperative to do physical activities at each camp en-route to acclimatize the body for that climate. This is not done in trips like one you took. Hence the problem. But this is what I had asked.

Where is the location with n-bends on the road? Did I miss it?
Thanx for the enjoyment you are sharing with us.

True. I even carried a small portable oxygen pump / cylinder as a precuation. Fortunately, it was not needed as actually there was no AMS complaints faced except my son saying he is feeling a bit uncomfortable. He was alright all the way so may be extreme cold, altitude, early rise at 2.45 am etc all together may have taken a toll.

Those are Zuluk Loops on the Old Silk Route - on the way back down from Nathula to Kalimpong thro' Zuluk. We travelled thro' those on the last day of the trip which I'm yet to cover here.

We stayed in Hotel Cliff View at Lachung. Excellent Hotel. As soon as we settled in the room, the room service guy (all-in-one) served Tea and Pakoda (Bhajji). We reached there around 4.30 or 5 pm & just relaxed in the large suite room with excellent views all around.

Day 10........ Lachung - ZERO Point - Lachung - Gangtok

As per my notes, We had 2 options - either go to Zero Point or Mt. Katau as both are in different directions. We opted for the popular Zero Point.

    Following is from my notes:

We left from hotel at 7.45 am after having breakfast. The road to Zero Point reminded me of our last year Ladakh Drive !
