Remember, we discussed this issue earlier. This govt. will do everything except hitting the nail directly on the head.

It is really hard to understand what the GOI is trying to do. I think there can be 2 aspects to this particular news. First, the GOI wants to make it clear to everyone that diesel prices are not being revised, to be with the aam admi, friend. Secondly, to show the nation that such a proposal was mooted by the Oil ministry which will be rejected by the Finance ministry, again to bolster the aam admi image of Congress.

We have been hearing this thing for sometime now. This same rumour has resulted in the highest ever sale of diesel vehicles in March'2012, but nothing happened in the budget. Auto companies have already made significant investments in setting up plants to manufacture diesel engines. I don't think they will allow the GOI to proceed in this direction. But very strangely there is no reaction from the auto companies and SIAM, so I have a doubt. Maybe this is another rumour to increase the June' 12 sales after the dismal sales figure of May' 12.

Diesel prices cannot be increased until and unless there is some sort of dual pricing strategy.

If diesel price is increased without it, then you can very well imagine it's effect on inflation. And the effect on the common man and the not well off people.

If this is going to see daylight, then I must say UPA is really throwing away their own wicket.. taking own efforts so that we see new people in Parliament soon :)

1.75L for small cars unlikely. That would kill the market for diesel cars and the industry will lobby VERY hard against it.

If this proposal is indeed implemented, God save companies who have heavily invested in Diesel engines.

A small pretext is enough for government to introduce a new tax.

EDIT: It used to be Rs.80000 few months back right? Now its 1.75L. Inflation effect:lol

If this new proposal is implemented the diesel car sales will effect, but what about the cars that are already on road and enjoying the subsidised diesel.
May be they should not charge extra for the new vehicles but impose annual Tax for all private diesel cars old or new.
This will still effect the diesel car sales, but not drastically, if the prospective customer calculates the running cost of a diesel vehicle per annum compared to a ever raising petrol cost.

Government will impose a special tax which will discourage people from buying phones thus saving diesel subsidy! :D

Mamta & company will throw tantrums as aam aadmi will get burdened so Manmohan will decide to tax only phones costing over Rs.25,000 so that only the rich are taxed.

By the way, as per the government, only those Indians making less then Rs.32 per day (Rs.26 per day in villages) are below poverty line. If they actually believe that, then they can easily de-regulate diesel prices can't they?

And to think of it they removed a railway minister within a week of his office who had asked for an increase in rail fares by a margin to provide better service and safety in railwaays....All that dharna and agitations for the so called BIG burden on "aam aadmi". What is to be noted is u might take a very long train journey once or twice a year. Same govt goes on increasing petrol prices every fortnight. No one sacks the petroleum minister for that burden on "aam aadmi"........what bloody hypocricy. Now there is no "aam aadmi" left ...Aam aadmi ka toh balatkaar kar kar ke "kela" bana diya hai inhon ne.

What about LPG/CNG vehicles? Do they consider a tax on them?
When tata nano come with diesel engine we need to pay 4-5 lakhs for it.
