    @Sagz

The other one is just a Reneagde rather than a mule of the c-suv destined for indian manufacture. But the camo means it's either (a) a new or different engine aka 1.5 mjd??

AND/OR: (b) a different front bumper and airdam: airflow testing?

The Jeep Cherokee is, strangely, going unmentioned either in gossip or by FCA insider leaks or in their plan for India. It's all about the local assembly of the Grand Cherokee and/or Wrangler Unlimited big-diesels, followed by the local manufacture of the C-Suv and/or Renegade. Nothing on the Cherokee.

Now this model is an almost unprecedentedly superhit for an Suv/toughCrossover in the US market, is selling well enough in Europe (esp in Germany no less), has the awesome, cutting-edge, new all-aluminium 2.2 litre mjd2 selling in Europe, and will begin localized manufacture in China later this year. Strange that it is not in plans? Is that because they don't want people to get spooked by its somewhat avant-garde styling (for a JEEP or for any SUV for that matter?) And so will introduce it later, once cheaper assembly kits become available from china?

The C-suv, the Renegade (?) and at least one all-new tata suv will apparently use the locally made 2 litre mjd. However, the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler will use the much bigger and more expensive 3/2.8 litre v6 diesels (respectively).

Hope they can find a way to use the new 2,2 litre mjd2 that is in the European Cherokee and will be on the Alfa Giulia etc too, maybe already on the Maserati Ghibli?, on the GC and W too, alongwith the Cherokee, which they really MUST bring by 2017 (GC and W come in 2016). Unless it more expensive?

Because a smaller, less expensive, less hp but humunguously torquey-from-low-revs engine is JUST the engine strategy Mercedes is using SO successfully on the M-class (now called GLE), indeed on most of their models, even the a-c- and e-class, thereby really pricing themselves brilliantly vis-a-vis Audi, BMW and Land Rover, in India.

IF it is notably less expensive than the 2.8 and the 3 litre v6 engines? The new 2.2 has recieved very very praiseful reviews in the UK and Europe, after all, and if it is great for Alfa and Maserati....

The destined-to-be-locally-made in India Jeep C-suv.

It MAY be that this cuv/suv, clearly less boxy than the classic Willy's shape of the Wrangler and even the Renegade, its sibling, will be exported to Europe and possibly even to the US (partly? fully?) from Brazil, taking advantage of the depreciared Real and the over-valued US dollar. In that sense, although the Indian rupee is not as 'undervalued' in relative terms, the FCA plan to base the manufacture of these new, smaller, more global cuv-cum-suv type vehicles outside of the US and probably outside of Europe too (except for the Fiat 500X twinned Melfi plant in Italy, for the Renegade) is JUST right: mainly to be built in Brazil, China and India, plus most likely Mexico (for the US market.)

Which is exciting for FCA's Indian plant as well as offerings: export-centricism (at a minimum to RHD markets) of the C-Suv should mean one or three (?) other of its platform and powertrain mates being locally-made here, too: the 500X, the Renegade, the 'new Avventura' (?), the Aegea sedan+hatch(cross version?), who knows maybe even the upcoming Fiat 500 5-door very-premium hatch.....

The strtaegy seems very much to size and spec these SUV-s as tweeners: between segments. The Renegade's clearly bigger and roomier than Duster/Yeti/S Cross/Creta, and the C-Suv will be even roomier, but smaller than the pickup truck based Fortuner, Pajero Sport and Ford Endeavour, as well as the Hyundai Santa Fe, while being much more advanced, chassis-, diesel powertrain- and suspension-wise, of course. The C Suv, unlike the Wrangler-cute-mimicry of the Reneagade, is rumoured to be styled more like the Grand Cherokee or maybe evn the edgier, more radical Cherokee?

And this, from all reports, even by 'insiders' is what the new, to-be-localized-in-India JEEP c-suv (said to be named 'Compass') will be like, exterior design-wise: athletic and chunky yet elegant- and coherent-enough, rather than too boxy or retro-Jeep-like. A scaled down Grand Cherokee, only with more athletic/more detailing. Except: the front headlights shown are probably wrong, and the actual ones will be projectors and learner in size, like with the current Grand Cherokee.

Another accurate seeming render of the to-be built in india (2017) Jeep C-suv, likely to be called either the Compass or the Compatriot. Certainly seems to get the taut, lean headlamps right, although perhaps not the lower bumper/airdam plus foglights, which are likely to be similar to those on the Renegade and the Cherokee as well as Grand Cherokee?

Looks splendid: not cheesy like the new Fortuner or Pajero Sport nor overly bulky trucklike (Ford Endeavour, Chevy Trailblazer, launching in India soon). Athletic, yet 'classy', lean-mean-clean but mature, etc.?

    http://www.allpar.com/news/index.php/2015/10/first-new-chinese-cherokee-30336

The JEEPs have cometh to Asia, locally made,......but first to/in China: the Jeep Cherokee, it of radical, edgy styling that was always designed with Chinese/Japanese/Korean and European tastes in mind, rather than just American, being the first of the post-Marchionne-merger, all-new FCA JEEPs (based off a derivative of the fwd Alfa Giulietta platform: Compact US Wide).

For Indian export-centric JEEP manufacture they've rightly chosen the smaller and cheaper C-Suv and/or Renegade (the second is doubtful for local Indian making, IMO). And have repeatedly stated: Grand Cherokee and Wrangler first as cbu-s, then GC to be locally assembled, then all-new C-SUV to be locally-made.....but no mention of the Cherokee? And yet that model can really go up hard against the German luxe suv-s, undercutting their prices?

Hope they find it worth their price/cost-competitive while to assemble the Chinese ckd-kit Cherokee here, with the locally-made 2 litre mjd: beat the us$/euro-versus-depreciated-rupee problem and really bite big into LandRover and German suv sales in India! And the thing really looks awesome and singular stylistically too, equal to my eye to the Range Rover Evoque that is its main, more expensive, competitor in Europe at least.

    Thanks @Sagz .

They're 2 litre mjd's, high-end, trailhawk (i.e., 4x4 + low ratio etc) models. I guess that implies (a) they're here for testing for the 2017 C-suv which will use these powertrains, including of course for exports (b) NOT that the renegade will be launched here anytime before 2018, being likely to be regarded here as too-small and/or too-expensive (c) the renegade might be on display, regardless, at the JEEP launch at the AutoExpo in feb 2016?

btw, consider this REALLY slow, polite, careful review of the Renegade 2 litre mjd 9-speed trailhawk top-of-the-range, by the german site autogefuhl (in english though) who are evidently unused to evaluating such a very-real-suv type of vehicle:
