    Hello fellow Fiat-ians,

I want to buy a Punto, not sure I should go for Petrol or Diesel.
Can you please help me differentiate between Petrol 1.4 and Diesel 1.3 MJD (90 HP) based on the following factors:

    1) Performance (BHP/Torque ratings/RPMs)
    2) Handling
    3) Engine sound/noise
    4) Mileage

    I currently drive Palio 1.2.

    Thanks,
    Manoj

What is the average usage per month. If it exceeds 750 kms, go ahead and buy the 90 HP Punto.

By the way, there is no 1.4 Emotion Punto in stock at the plant.

Yes the usage per month would be around 800 to 1000kms.
Which one delivers more power.... 90HP Diesel or 1.4 petrol?

    1. Performance - well figures on the paper might not give you the exact feel, hence I would recommend you to test drive the petrol and diesel versions back to back and choose whichever you like.

    2. Handling - undoubtedly, FIAT is the best handler (heard Ford Figo is one too) but my vote goes to FIAT for an excellent well weighted meaty steering. You can cruise at 120 - 130 kms on Punto with complete confidence on highways and the steering never feels lite no matter what speed you are on. The brakings of the car are just top notch and body control is good too.

    3. Engine Sound - well, diesel engines are a bit noisy, but its all about getting used to it. I find my 90HP MJD just nice regardless of noise produced at higher speeds (120 + km/hr). I would say multijet produces less sound than TDI or Ford engines atleast, I find K9K engines to be less noisy.

    4. Mileage - it depends on your driving style, if you are light footed, you can achieve 13 - 14 in peak traffic (Bangalore traffic). My Punto 90HP MJD gives me 13 km/ltr with AC always on. Not sure about the petrol version's mileage.

Finally, its your choice depending on your monthly usage to opt for a diesel or petrol. Somehow, I find Multijet engines to be fun to drive than conventional petrol engines (Except for the turbo lag in diesels).

    Good Luck mate :)

    Grande Punto 1.3 90 HP
    1.4 FIRE - 90 PS@ 6000 RPM & Torque is 209NM@ 2000 RPM

    1.3 MJD - 93 PS@4000 RPM & Torque is 114 NM@ 4000 RPM.

    Absolutely diesel GP.
If you go for diesel you get strong low end torque, less gear changes.
Regarding to NVH level 90 HP is super refined after use of 20000 km.

If your monthly running is less than 1500 km then go for petrol.
In addition to that if you want drivability, less gear changes, better low end torque in petrol engine then 1.2 is better choice.

1.4 is also good but 1.2 has better drivability than 1.4.

    @Bhai

Slight correction, the torque of Multijet and FIRE engine has been interchanged.

Multijet has 209 NM of torque and FIRE has 119 NM of torque.

    Cheers :)

The main difference I see is the 1.3 90HP will keep you grinning, even after refueling!
I've got 9-10 kmpl from the 1.4 and 13-14 kmpl from the 1.3 90HP same person driving, similar conditions.
