    Punto Evo 1.2
    Gentlemen,
i am planning to buy my first family car. was initially inclined towards the Figo till i came across this site and one look at the old punto made me fall head over heels for this beauty. i had not considered even having a look at the marutis and the hyundais. however, will all the adulation for this car, i find it a bit costlier ( i am referring to the emotion variant with airbags/ABS-EBD etc ie safety features). the price difference between the basic model and the top version is steep at Rs. 2.10 lakh , whereas with the figo the difference between the basic and the top model is just about Rs. 1.20 lakh. while the heart beats for the punto, the economic mind points to the figo. really confused and hence seek your expert advice. Pls note apart from figo and punto have not even thought about any other car. Thanks in anticipation.

    Hi Purshotam77,

First of all welcome to TFI !!

Let me get straight to the point : I am assuming you are comparing the Punto Evo Emotion 1.3 and the Figo Titanium 1.4

Your main concern is the price and I would base my argument on "what is it that you are getting in what you are paying". If the sum of benefits / features you get in the Punto are larger than the price you pay it would be justified to get the Punto. Here is what you get *more* in the Punto vis a vis the Figo

    • A much modern and refreshed vehicle: Figo is aging now and apart from a facelift hasn't seen anything radical happen to it. The Punto Evo on the other hand is completely refreshed, re designed, has a completely revised exterior and interior. The engine and gearbox remain the same as the earlier version though.
    • A modern and better spec engine: The Punto Evo has the acclaimed 1.3 MJD with 4 cylinder 16 valve configuration giving you 75 hp of peak power and a torque of 197 Nm. The Figo 1.4 has the 4 cylinder 8 valve engine that gives you 68 hp of peak power and a torque of 160 Nm. On the plus side though the Figo's engine has a higher displacement and is good for city driving. But overall the Punto Evo engine is much better spec'ed, modern and refined.
    • Tyre profiles: The Evo comes with 195/60/R15 tyres while the Figo comes with 175/60/R14 tyres. I am sure you have heard / read enough stories about the handling and cornering abilities of the Punto. The bigger tyres do play a significant part in that. Forget the Figo - the tyre size on the Evo even beats what the Honda City has !!
    • Build Quality: Can't quantify this. But check out for yourself. The Punto feels much more solid and has a superior build quality compared to the Figo.
    • Service Interval: Evo has a 12 month / 15,000 km (whichever earlier) service interval whereas Figo has a 12 month / 10,000 km (whichever earlier) service interval
    • Warranty: Evo comes with a 3 year standard warranty that can be extended by another 2 years by paying extra. Figo comes with a 2 year standard warranty that can be extended by another 2 years. So five years for the Evo and four years for the Figo (which manufacturer you think has more trust in their brand. The one that backs its product for 5 years or 4 years?)

    Features:
    • The Evo gets climate control whereas the Figo gets a manual AC.
    • Rear AC vents present in the Evo. Not on the Figo. (You said you want to buy a family car right? The rear occupants have equal right to the cool air ;))
    • Evo gets integrated turn indicators on the ORVM. Figo doesn't
    • Evo gets fog lamps in the front and rear. Figo has fog lamps only in the front (stupid cost cutting by Ford! that too on the top end variant)
    • Multi function dashboard with Distance to Empty, Trip Summary, Average Speed etc. Figo gets just the Distance to Empty. For the rest keep your calculator or smartphone handy
    • Bluetooth functionality is common in both. However in the Figo you can stream music through the phone as well. Not so in the Evo.

These are some points that I could recollect immediately. I am sure there are points that I have missed and others will point out.

Overall : the Punto is a much modern, better built and better equipped vehicle. It is a charm to drive on the highways and is competent in the city too.

I urge you to look at this decision over a 5 year horizon and not as a short term one. If you buy the Evo today and look back after 5 years I bet you won't regret. The car WILL serve you well. I am myself driving a Punto for the past 5 years now. So you can take my word for this.

Now on this note I am also moving your post and my reply to a new thread in the Car Purchase section where such queries are discussed and addressed.

    Thanks!

    Amogh

Welcome to TFI Purushotam. Go with what your heart says. It'll never deceive you. Punto is an excellent choice. No other car in this segment can match the ride, handling, stability, built quality, the feeling of safety, braking, suspension Punto offers. You'll start to have a new found love & emotion towards your car. You can see that from this forum & 9000+ Fiat fans itself. You cant see such a huge fan following for any other brand in India. That itself proves how good Fiat cars are. And there will be price difference btwn Figo & Punto as its one segment higher. Punto comes in premium hatchback segment & it competes with Polo, i20 & Swift. Im sure the experts out here will clear all your doubts regarding both the cars & let you choose the best decision upon your needs. May be you can consider starting a separate thread titling Punto vs Figo so that it'll help other prospective buyers too.

Damn! I missed a critical point and can't believe I missed it.

Looks: Figo doesn't even a hold a candle to the Punto Evo when it comes to looks.

Now who doesn't want a good looking car standing in their garage? The Evo is tall (higher GC) and handsome than the Figo.

I am not bringing in the "emotional" aspects of FIAT ownership. They are very well demonstrated by the presence of this forum and the membership strength seen here :)

I guess by mentioning old Punto, purushotam meant Grande Punto. Other than the new cosmetic changes & the reworked gear ratios, whatever Amogh mentioned about Evo is similar to Old Grande Punto. The link posted by Ramesh will be of great help to him :)

Bluetooth A2DP Streaming and Blue & ME limitations workaround.

purshotam77, Amogh has already given a pretty exhaustive and full of clarity reply covering most points. :)
Just a few points to add about music streaming despite Blue and Me A2DP support issue, actually (supposedly :?) limited only by a firmware upgrade from Fiat.

    Option 1 : [App] BTmono - v1.2 - ICS Fixes - Yum | HTC EVO 4G | XDA Forum << for Android.

    Option 2 : USB powered Bluetooth A2DP adapter. >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No2aoFmjGE0 << for any OS.

Option 3 : Blue & Me app for iphone, perhaps also for Android. << not the best option for music but workable.

    Purshottam,

I am confused whether you are interested in the old Punto or the Punto evo launched recently? if its the old punto then the argument made by Amogh and others till hold good except a few but the biggest advantage is the old Punto will be available at a good discount. Hence your worry of steep difference between the base & top end variant is no longer applicable. During my selcetion process I extensively test drove Figo and Punto and had the same mind vs heart dilema. Finally Punto won for the features it provides making it more VFM buy than Figo. Also the engine noise ingressing inside the Figo was too much to put me off.

Exactly my feeling too. Figo looks very puny and like a rat to me. Punto is heavy, big and more manly like having a mustang. ;)

I would recommend going for the Punto Evo and not the old Punto. Although structurally and engine + gearbox wise the old Punto is no different from the Evo, the Evo is a modern package. Plus the interiors are superior. It is going to be his first family car. Should buy the latest. Don't compromise
