Does the weight of the vehicle can be a factor?. Momentum of vehicle at any speed will be more for Fiat than its light weight counter parts. So the breaking force required to stop the vehicle is more. One has to compare equally massive vehicles like Fabia and Punto. Does skoda cars have this early worn out break pad problems? Assume that Punto and Jazz use the same quality break pads then the Puntos pads has to suffer great friction than Jazz.

I was coming to Kerala through Bandhipur

---------- Post added at 10:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:02 AM ----------

I was coming to Kerala through Bandhipur where road repair was going on. After I crossed that area, some squeaking sound started coming from the front left tyre while accelerating. I was not able to check much in the middle of the forest. I continued till I reached a workshop in Gudalur where I got the tyre removed and disk brake visually checked. Could not find anything stuck, and the disc was freely rotating. But I did not hear that sound after that.
Now after few days, I could hear sound coming from the same front left while braking to stop. The sound comes just before the car completely stops. I got this inspected from Gem motors Coimbatore. The SA suggested to replace both the disc and the pads. He said it needs to be changed at every 15k kms. ( My car has run 14k+ kms ) I could not accept changing the disc at every 15k kms.( He said it will cost below Rs 5000 to change them both) Suggested him to clean the disc and pads and I will change after consulting further. ( I was suspecting the could could be due to something got stuck on the disc or the pads )

The squeaking sound still persists while the applying brake to stop.

Is it effective to change the brake pads only without changing the discs? How about other punto owners ? Any of us has changed brake discs at 15K ?

    Thanks

    Savin

@savinvas: Is there any updation from your side

The brake pads will wear after long use. Vehicles have a mechanism to detect it. They will have a metal pieces hidden in friction meterieal that squel when it get exposed and touches the rotor. This is the indication that we need to change the pads. High end cars have electrical circuits that closes when this metallic parts touches the rotors and inform the driver via warning lights. Another thing is that the wear and tear of friction materiel in brake pads depends on the materiel used and the choice depending on what we want to achieve better braking power, at high speeds, better braking speeds at low speeds, durability.
The choice will be a trade of between what we are looking for. Fiat vehicles are the best in braking action. So I suspect that they have given more priority for
that at the price of life of it. But finally it is going to save our life if not our pocket.
I am not sure whether the disc have any problem as mentioned by the service person.

If any one know about the materiel used in punto/Linea braking pads please share it. It will throw more lights in to the discussion.

He is asking Rs 3K for change...is this valid?

Brake pad set costs around Rs.2500+ labor charges.
if you dont want to believe what TASS says, yourself take a look at the brake pads when the car is at TASS. You can kind of make out how much is left.

My punto's brake pads were changed during the 15k service, recently i took my vehicle for the 30k service, ( i hadn't clocked 30k yet, it was around 27.5k) and the SA comes up with the same crap again, sir the brake pads are worn out, needs to be changed. I was like WTH. anyway, i dint pay heed to his advice and told him not to change them. He then changed tack and told me it will run for another 2k.

I think this is an easy ploy to dupe us in spending close to 2.5k extra on a service.

The problem i am now facing is that after the service, the braking is not convincing. I feel the TASS fellows tinkered with my brakes so that i will return to them and get the pads changed :(

Yes..I will check..but my problem is why it wears out at 10K itself....very poor right?

FIAT's brake pad material seems to be a soft one and wears out much earlier. But braking is always efficient. I had changed my first brake pad at 11k and the second one at 26k on ODO(15k kms). If it is just some whistling noise while braking, it need not be because of worn-out brake pads.
TASS tend to squeeze the innocent-looking customers. If you put on a face like "This is MY car, I know about each and every part in MY car", they will come to your terms.
Best you can do is, be present near the car when they remove the brake pads and check whether it has really worn out. Check how much of asbestos is left on it.

As quoted by Clash81 above it's easy money for these SC folks. Request you to check it personally or if you can't post the picture over here and people can give you idea. For the record I changed by brake pads only at 40K with 2-3K life left on them.
