    till a week ago i thought i had a fantastic car Fiat Linea Emotion Diesel bought May 2010 done 68000 km, although it was sometimes expensive to service at the 60,0000km service. That changed last sunday when i was driving toBangalore to Vellore, the car suddenly stopped on the highway and did not start , i had no warning from the engine at all. Had to tow the car back to bangalore. got a shock from my service center that my turbo is gone because of dust and my hard block has to be changed , given a huge estimate. Am totally stunned by this experience, i thought the linea engine was fabulous. No reason has been given as to why this has happened. The car has run just 5 or 6 thousand KM after the 60000 service.
    Has anybody had such an experience. Dr. P.C.jacob, Bangalore

    I have seen many 1.4 engines opened for some block related issues at a garage I regularly visit, but yours is a horrific experience no doubt. Having engine issue and turbo gone kaput together is really something rare.

    If the car is towed already, one cannot even take another opinion. Did you ask for the estimate on the same. I am assuming you don't have CNG fitment?

    I heard that Turbo is servicable/repairable. As regards, head/block? there are specialists who undertake fixing these issues as job work.

    Bangalore based Mods & fellow TFIans please guide further.

    EDIT : your details show 1.4 emotion and you have mentioned Emotion Diesel.. you have a fire engine or MJD?

    Do write an email to Fiat and explain your service details and ask what is expected of you in such a rarity.

    Which are you have? You mentioned Turbo, so I am guessing its MJD.

    Did you replace your timing chain in your last service at 60K km?

    Exactly my query too, Was your timing belt changed ? And secondly is vehicle Fire or MJD? Your Signature and description contradicts; 1.4 Fire NA doesnt have Turbo.

    Please contact Turbo energy limited. They also provide re-manufactured turbos, but I am not sure if VGTs are also provided. Please call or email them and update here.

    One question - Did you practice idling of min 30 sec before switching off the engine? Also the reason of turbo failure due to dust is strange, it might be because of foreign material in the lubrication system which might have forced the turbo to go kaput. The most common reason for the turbo failure are as follows:

    • Lack of lubricating oil or oil delay;
    • Foreign material or dirt in the lubricating system;
    • Oil break-down;
    • Foreign material in exhaust or air-filtration systems;
    Material and workmanship can also be a reason but more so if the turbo is replaced at un authorised centres. Whatever be the reason of failure if the cause of turbo failure is not correctly diagnosed and rectified before fitting a replacement turbocharger it is likely the new turbo will suffer damage and fail for the same reason.

    BTW what the estimate of repairs? Do you have EW? Can the turbo be replaced either in warranty or in Insurance claim?

    There is no warranty replacement for turbos. FASS sends it to TEL to check if it is repairable, and if so it would be refurbished, else TEL would provide another refurbished one.

    This was told to me by Ramkay Fiat.

    pardon my ignorance here.. What is hard block? is it the engine block itself or the performance application used by drag racers?

    Is it possible to make fiat pay for these repairs by going to consumer court, does anybody here have any experience regarding this. how effective is the consumer court in these matters.
