Mumbai - Goa trip was on my to do list for years. And finally manage to complete on 23rd of Oct 2011 along with my friend and his family who was driving Aveo. Here's a short statistics of my trip to Goa and back.

KMs: 1,197 KM (Includes drive within Goa)
    Fuel: 59 Litres
    Route:
Khaghar (Navi Mumbai) - Pune - Nipani - Sawantwadi - Calanguate (NH4 till Nipani) Travel Time 13 Hrs (includes lunch break)
    NH4---Mumbai-Nipani.jpg

Calanguate - Sawantwadi - Kankavali - Rajapur - Chiplun - Pen - Khaghar (Navi Mumbai) (NH17) Travel Time 16 hrs + (includes lunch, tea and dinner break)
    NH17.jpg

    Toll:

Mumbai – Pune Expressway Rs 165
    Khedshivapur Rs 65
    Anewadi Rs 45
    Taswade Rs 58
    Kini Rs 58
    Kognoli Rs 25

Need not to mention the drive on Mumbai - Pune Expressway was amazing, specially early morning.

NH4, from Pune till Nipani diversion is nice, but bit boring. Roads are gr8, traffic was less; may be it was Sunday. We took 2-3 small breaks because of kids.

After exiting NH4 from Nipani, the road towards Sawantwadi is narrow but very scenic and driving was more enjoyable here. Though very few hotels and restaurants were found on that road.

Roads are very bad in shape in some patches, each patches around 20-40 KM, specifically after Sawantwadi. It was difficult to drive above 20 KMPH.

Over all, the journey was awesome. Though NH 17 is more scenic but roads and ghats kill more time and some patches on NH 17 is really really bad. My advice would be take NH 17 while going Goa and take NH 4 while coming back to Mumbai.

    More to come...

Where did you stay at Goa?
Did you stopped at Amboli at a spot called Mahadevgadh?
