In my view, a change so high in nature is unlikely. In Delhi, diesel vehicles are being charged around 25% of the registration which is around 6%. So, effectively the tax increase is to the tune of 1.25% to 1.5% of the ex-showroom. Rs 80000 seems a high amount. Lets wait and watch

This would impact every manufacturer & not FIAL alone, but since it supplies engines to other manufacturers the impact can be a little more.

Another example of the outdated mindset of our government. Thanks to the idiotic babu's & minister's whose only job is to indulge in populist vote bank politics, consumers of the least amount of diesel are going to be taxed heavily!

Ironically, it's the planning commission (a part of the governemnt!) that has said that personal diesel cars account for only 0.6% of diesel consumed in our country. Agriculture consumes almost 19% of diesel in India yet nobody dare touch that sector. I also wonder how much diesel is consumed by the diesel gensets in our country simply because the government failed to generate electricity as per demand.

Higher registration tax will not be that big a deterrent, especially for heavy users. The governement should free petrol as well as diesel pricing, and equate the taxes on them. Maybe diesel may need an additional environemnt tax, as in EU. The babus and politicos have generated a false fear that it will lead to long term inflation - in fact the subsidy is the biggest reason for the inflation we have been seeing.

On the positive side, a shift in favour to Petrol should help TJet alot. One reason why it didn't picked up as expected was the bad timing - its introduction coincided with the hike in petrol prices.

Along with the tax on diesel cars, why can't the government remove the idiotic 1.2L petrol engine capacity ruling for excise benefits. All that this 'brilliant policy' has brought is sluggish small cars that whine and cry and don't deliver the mileage that the government thought they would thanks to the heavy bodies mated to small engines.
