This is some big news in the world of gadgets. :)

Nokia Corporation on Tuesday announced that it has signed an agreement to sell substantially all of its Devices & Services business and licence its patents to Microsoft for €5.44 billion in cash. It expects to gain €3.2 billion from the deal.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia shareholders, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. After the deal closure Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop, will move to Microsoft Corp. Nokia board Chairman Risto Siilasmaa will take over CEO duties while the Finnish firm is looking for a new CEO.

It only means even the mighty will fall. Very few things in life are stable and tomorrow is always a new day with new challenges.

Vicious business cycle - Nokia, Motorola nd Ericsson; once the pioneers of mobile manufacturing and now almost in same sailing boat.

But, in the case of Nokia I doubt if the brand will be demolished like others. I believe Microsoft will retain Brand Nokia for mobile handsets.

But, what prevented nokia from using android platform and recapture the market?
When a huawei can storm the world market and break into top 10, what happened to nokia?

+1 to Ramesh. The brand name will continue. If they change the name, their most important market - India just might reject them. People here buy Nokia because it's a Nokia. :)

Now the ball is in Microsoft's court to try and do what Apple has been doing all these years - a perfect harmony of software and hardware. Present a REAL alternative to Apple , Android.

The consumer stands to win if it happens. Everyone else will up their game too. :)

  8. Nokia would have been much more costly for M$ buy, this whole thing looks like dram written by M$ to gulp Nokia, it started with burning platform email leaked to whole world.
Remember not too long ago Nokia was $76 billion. They should have not hired ex M$ person as CEO.
Now M$ has support of patents to take a swipe at Google(Motorola)

    Bala,
Elop was a fan of M$ since ages, i remember reading long back that Elop and Monkey Ballmer are close friends. The moment Nokia decided to dump Symbian, Elop wanted to move completely to MS so that 1 fine day like this, he could move up M$ tree.
