As per the report from ET :

In a move aimed at making roads safer for people, the government has decided to introduce stringent safety norms under which all new cars will have to undergo mandatory crash tests from October 2017.

"The government is finally enforcing stringent crash test norms to be mandatory for all new cars from October 2017, while for upgrades of existing models, the deadline will be from October 2018," secretary, ministry of heavy industries, Rajan Katoch said on Tuesday.

"New minimum safety norms, including frontal and side crash tests, will apply to all cars — entry level, small and cheaper models. As per the new order, cars would be tested for frontal crash norms at 56 kmph, while for the side crash test, it will be at 50 kmph," Katoch said, addressing a conference on 'road safety' here.

The conference was jointly organised by the International Road Federation (IRF) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The Automotive Research Association of India has developed a comprehensive testing facility at Chakan, near Pune, to crash test the new vehicles, he said.

The new test facility offers a range of crash tests like full-frontal impact, side impact and offset-frontal impact etc. From now on, all these tests can be carried out under one roof for the first time in India, he added.

    Thanks for the info @MakeTheMove

If this becomes mandatory, then provision of air bags and ABS will also become mandatory on all variants of the model. If this is the case then car prices would see a huge jump in their prices. Presently safety in a car is a luxury than a necessity. I hope the car manufacturers in India will retain the existing prices while providing the best and highest standards of safety equipments.

Hope the future generation will turn out to be far safer drivers on the roads.

If this interview is true then the prices of cars should not exceed by or be around Rs. 20k than the current prices.

The premium price that current cars with airbags and abs come with mainly includes the bells and whistles, leather, alloys etc that pushes the price up!!
Currently Its all controlled by the auto makers forcing the safety conscious buyers to pay a higher price for that car with unnecessary luxury.

all modern cars (top end variant or so) that come with abs airbags; the lower variants have the required capability and space in the car for abs system and airbags; then why not offer as an accessory from the factory?

I remember the Indica V2 turbo was offered with ABS airbags for a short period and the price difference between the DLX turbo and the DLX (abs+airbags) turbo was minimal (less than 35k afaik) - dont quote me on this :p

anyway finally its a move in the right direction.. :)

If crash tests norms to be mandatory from October 2017 then airbags will be mandatory because without airbags the car will get 0 star even before crash test. Then looking towards the current list of Fiat cars in India, Fiat Linea classic and Fiat Punto pure will come with driver and front passenger airbags. Can we hope this will happen or Fiat will discontinue these two models which comes without abs and airbags.?

Hello guys, anyone have any idea if Fiat will offer airbags and abs standard on base variants of its car soon or at least as an optional , as these features will become standard from October 2017 as crash will be mandatory.

Who knows, Govt. may postpone that to October, 2018 as automotive lobbying is very powerful in this country.

Whatever, If Pure or EVO base model comes with ABS and Airbags, I will be on the first line to buy it. :)
