Not entirely true I think, mine is a february manufactured vehicle complying to BS4 norms. There was a differentiation within the VIN number itself. I shall look up and post that information when I get access to pc. Also the improved plastics where right there from january made vehicles.

This is what my assumption is. What I remember is when the Punto was launched, I remember reading somewhere in the forum that Punto complies to BS4 norms.

No pun intended ,until and unless Fiat releases something like a TSB, a Technical Service Bulletin describing the changes to the Linea/Punto from 2009-11, we'll all be guessing at best. Most major Manufacturers release TSB's the world over to let the dealer know of the changes. Does anyone know of the existence of such a document with the TASS people? I'm not much hopeful TASS guys know all the changes inside out.

    Cheers.

hmmm. generally when manufacturers modify the bs3 engines to bs4 to comply to the pollutions and efficiencey norms they have to do many changes to the components.

    1. Catalytic converter
    2. Intake manifold
    3. EGR circuit
    4. Retune the engine
    5. Sometimes change in injectors-depending on versions used.
    6. And many more tits and bits.

overall it costs anything between 15-20k to the indian companies like tata & fiat.

BS4 engines run a bit lean than BS3 engines. its very much noticable in petrol engines. enthusiasts prefer bs3 for their performance and quick throttle responses

Thats what i was thinking, it couldnt be simple case of Retuning as suggested by Bhai.

Also Fiat was offering same car in two engine offering of BS3 and BS4 with the same manufactured month with a difference of about 10k. Which is strange, if only the retune of engine was required to convert BS3 to BS4 and why charge extra 10k for same month car. Also there was cost cutting in BS4 cars in terms of weight and no 3rd headrest in back seat for Emotion PK etc and still it was costlier by 10k.

FIAT was offering same car in two engines i.e. in BS-3 & BS-4 because after 3oth April 2010 in metro cities Euro-4 norms are compulsory. & in other small cities there was permission to sell BS-3 car.So for metro city production of Euro-IV & for other cities prduction of Euro-III cars. Same like MSIL. Maruti has discontinued to sell Euro-III Alto /Wagon R in metro. But still old (Euro-III) Alto,Wagon-R are avialable in small cities. This is stock clearing strategy. That's why production of both cars (EURO-III & EURO-IV)For retunning of engine manufacturer has to do R & D on ECU value. Retunning is not easy. While doing retunning manufacturer has to take care about not to disturb original engine values.e.g. Compression Ratio,Valve timing,Injection timing etc. It includes lot of R&D job for retunning. So the cost of R&D of ECU firmware is collected from customer. This is the reason of price hike of Euro-IV car.

AFAIK, since launch, MJD was a BS IV/Euro IV complaint engine. The state of tune was kept at BS 3 to cater to the type of fuel available. When BS IV compliance was made mandatory, state of tune was changed. IMHO, it has to do with re-circulation timing of exhaust gases to get more power.

BS IV has not been notified across India. There are still parts of India where BSIV compliant fuel is not available. For this reason, many manufacturers still manufacture engine with both BS III and BS IV compliance. BS III is made for places where BS III fuel only is available. AFAIK, Delhi is BS IV compliant and if you want a BS III engine, you will have to check if there are any downsides of using BS IV fuel in a BS III engine.
