We reached Hanle at around 5 pm. Checked into the Home Stay an then visited the observatory.

We actually tried to skip Hanle but couldn't. That means we need to travel from Pangong to Tso Moriri for which there are 3 routes. But Pangong-Chushul drive was non-negotiable for us. Pangong-Chushul-Tso Moriri is a long drive. So, we tried various possibilities if we can get hold of anything to stay at Loma, Mahe or Nyoma. But HVK shot it down saying there is nothing specific to stay there and to reach there and to find for a place to stay may get tricky. So, went ahead to Hanle just for Night stay as he advised.

5h July'16... Hanle to Tso Moriri

At Hanle Home Stay....left at 9 am

Under the Clear Blue Sky with rarefied air of Hanle

The drive is not complete without a photo stop at Tso Kiager lake en-route!

This time, though, the water was quite lesser than what was there in 2014

The water was so still at Tso Moriri and created wonderful reflections of blue sky and white clouds throughout

    Question about Hanle.

Didn't you stay there during night? Hanle is one popular destination to shoot the galaxy. :)
Also, good that they allowed to carry cameras to Hanle. When @sathya_sc went there, he was not allowed to carry cameras.
  4. VahanPujari

    VahanPujari Staff Member Janitor

Yes. Hanle is THE place to shot Galaxy and Milky way due to rarefied air and low light pollution. But I don't carry Tripod nor have reached to that level on Photography as hobby :)

Till, 2013 Camera was an issue. In 2014, as soon as we reached Chushul, we packed all our cameras till we reached nearer to Hanle. This time also, we stopped taking pics as soon as Pangong left India to enter into neighboring country and resumed only after we crossed sensitive areas. However, there was no checking or questions on camera this time nor we faced it in 2014. Seems there are no issues now since nobody has raised this in this year.

And yes, we did stay overnight in Hanle

What could be altitude at Hanle? W.r.to AMS is it generally recommended to stay at Hanle?

    VahanPujari Staff Member Janitor

AMS is not an issue at Hanle. It's at about 14,700 feet altitude. What makes it an ideal location for observatory is one of the lowest light pollution and rarefied air.

Next Day plan was to drive straight to Keylong from Tso Moriri. That means it was our last day in Ladakh and by end of the day we'll enter HP border.

    6th July'16:

Left Tso Moriri at 7 am. Target - to reach Keylong. Tso Moriri to Tso Kar, the road is non-existent. Reached Tso Kar at around 10 am.

At around 11 am, we would have caught up Leh-Manali Highway at Debring. The Highway is excellent thereafter for sometime.

We would have reached Keylong by around 7 pm. After 10-12 days of wilderness, we got the taste of Geyser hot water shower !! :)

    7th JULY"16

Left Keylong at around 7.30 pm and filled the tankful of fuel at Tandi. After 1000 kms circuit of Leh-Hundar-Agham-Shyok-Pangong-Chushul-Hanle-Tso Moriri-Keylong and carrying 40 Ltr fuel, there was still about 15-20 Ltr diesel remaining in the tank.

    Rohtang Tunnel (Work in Progress)

    20160707-IMG_4744.jpg 20160707-IMG_4775.jpg 20160707-DSC_1279.jpg 20160707-DSC_1286.jpg 20160707-DSC_1310.jpg

If Baralacha La was robbed off snow, Rohtang was no different. No Snow. Tourists were climbing down at patches of snow at one spot. No snow means not many tourist vehicles and hence less traffic.
