If the views on the road 5 kms before Rangdum were amazing, the beauty of the views after Rangdum puts it to shame!

The climb to Pensi La has started and the Magic has begun...

We couldn't resist ourselves of stopping here to capture & freeze the Landscapes.

    We make a move again.......

Like such we made slow progress stopping every now and then. A couple of kms ahead we found following:

To add to the beauty, there are twin Lakes Stat Tso / Lang Tso also. Lang Tso was frozen. We went crazy for some time taking pics everywhere, the beauty was so compelling.

    ....contd....Day 5:

4 kms while climbing down from Pensi La is the sight I would never forget. The magnificent Drang Drung Glacier. A Kargil Doctor later told us at JKTDC that it’s 16 km long and it used to be right on the road few years back but is now a bit far due to melt down. We spent 30-45 minutes there from about 5 to 5.45 pm. Those moments are inked in memory forever.

    20140616-DSC_2616.jpg 20140616-DSC_2630.jpg 20140616-DSC_2634.jpg 20140616-DSC_2642.jpg 20140616-DSC_2645.jpg 20140616-DSC_2647.jpg 20140616-DSC_2606.JPG 20140616-DSC_2607.JPG 20140616-DSC_2608.JPG 20140616-DSC_2609.JPG 20140616-DSC_2610.JPG 20140616-DSC_2611.JPG

On the way back from Drang Drung to Rangdum.....

    20140616-DSC_2660.jpg 20140616-DSC_2663.jpg 20140616-DSC_2673.jpg

As I mentioned earlier, whenever I drive to Ladakh in future, all my trips would have Zanskar and Drang Drung for sure. It’s another world, aloof, no tourists hence no commercialization / pollution, close to nature – only you and nature.

In all these appreciation for Drang Drung or Parkachik, we can’t neglect Rangdum for it’s located at one of the most beautiful locations. Standing in Rangdum, if you move 360 degree circle, you’ll find majestic glaciers everywhere on all sides. Check it at night or early morning in moonlight!! I saw it next morning and was speechless looking at the sight.

We reached back Rangdum at around 7.45 pm. The evening has started becoming Freezing cold. It’s now that we found out that there is no water supply in taps in JKTDC GH. They gave us 2 buckets of ice cold water and if we want more, we’ve to bring it from the open compound (though later they brought it from compound). Forgot to measure the temp but I’m sure it was sub-zero. The blankets and beds/ mattresses though were quite comfortable and warm. The electricity was given thro’ a solar-charged battery which got discharged in one of our rooms in night. Fortunately we had the battery-powered stack of LED’s with us (another important item to carry).

Next day was again going to be another very long drive from Rangdum to Kargil to Leh hence decided to get up at 3 am and leave by 4 am.

    Day 6, 16th June'14:

In the chilling cold of a Rangdum morning, got up at 3 am & left by 4.30 am. The car was parked facing a wall and the bonnet was covered with a Thermal proof material and tarpoline, the engine was kept ON / idling for 15 minutes previous night. First crank, and the car started !! This is necessary else in such freezing cold, it may give trouble in starting up. The early morning sight of snow peaks all around in the pure moonlight is awesome and magical. Tried to take some shots in moonlight till by fingers went numb. Was not carrying tripod and the long shutter speed required to capture moonlight shots means images are blurred. But, absolutely amazing sight!

    20140617-DSC_2678.jpg 20140617-DSC_2680.jpg 20140617-DSC_2685.jpg

In the morning sunlight, the views are even better! Few snow-capped peaks shine like “Golden Top”. This time, after Parkachik, we took that other elevated route/ bye pass which is on the RHS of the route thro’ which we came. This route is mostly tarred / broken tar and faster.

    20140617-DSC_2700.jpg 20140617-DSC_2708.jpg 20140617-DSC_2715.jpg 20140617-DSC_2716.jpg 20140617-DSC_2718.jpg 20140617-DSC_2722.jpg 20140617-DSC_2727.jpg 20140617-DSC_2731.jpg 20140617-DSC_2740.jpg 20140617-DSC_2746.jpg 20140617-DSC_2758.jpg 20140617-DSC_2760.jpg 20140617-DSC_2774.jpg

Reached at the same water stream which raised doubts in our minds while going to Rangdum previous day. My bro happily handed over steering to me :D

Awesome picture, breathtaking views. The pictures of golden tops (from Sun light) are superb.
And some your personal pictures, with snow cladded mountains in background, are just too good.
Yes it looks so, just you 3 and nature.

On the way back, because it was early morning, the current in the water stream was comparatively "slower". Let's see in the video clip how we crossed it easily.

For a change, there were 2 tourists cars which was on the other side of the stream (going towards Rangdum)

    ....contd....Day 6:

We had out breakfast at Sankoo at about 10 am. Actually, a JKTDC doctor advised us to visit a Buddha statue in Sankoo also which is one of the oldest. But, it was a detour of about 5-7 kms from Sankoo, hence decided against it for the drive for the day is going to be long.

We crossed Kargil at about 11-11.30 am (not sure about time) and joined the mainstream highway. From hereon for next 2-3 days, we’ll be alongwith the “3 Idiots” crowd before embarking upon a 850-odd kms long, a sort of a “Black Hole” circuit without a fuel pump and without mobile connectivity, almost.

We stopped for refueling just outised of Kargil and got freshen up. Road construction work was going on between Kargil to Mulbekh leading to bad patches at few places. On this route, our first stop was at Mulbekh to visit rock-cut Maitreya Buddha.

Stark difference in topography now. From a land of Glaciers, we're now in the land of mountains of multiple shades with varying heights, different texture, different formations etc. Let's see it thro' cam Lens :)

Rock-cut Maitreya Buddha at Mulbekh. It's right on the highway, you can't miss it.

Just breath taking landscape. Love the shades and the texture of the mountains. Mesmerizing

Its a place which I do not think we would ever be able to digest the beauty how many ever times we visit.

Another customary photo shoot happened at Arrow-straight road after Lamayuru….between Saspol & Nimmu. Though, this has become famous, I felt there are better & longer arrow-straight roads that we travelled thro’ later – Nubra Valley, just before Diskit & the other one was probably between Tso Moriri & Debring (after Tso Kar, if I remember correctly).

    Leh fast approaching.....
    20140617-DSC_3202.jpg

Visited confluence of Zanskar & Indus rivers. Went to the lower road where wind was blowing like “toofan”. Saw the live effect of such ferocious wind which creeps in the crevices of mountains which may cause erosion and landslide. Had customary photo shoot and left in a hurry.

    20140617-DSC_3209.jpg 20140617-DSC_3210.jpg

Experienced the optical illusion of Magnetic Hill on the way. Checked again after 2 kms & again after another 2-3 kms. The effect remains for almost 5 kms from the point of Magnetic Hill. It looks like the car is climbing upward slope in neutral / OFF on its own (actually it’s downward slope). I guess there could be quite a few places where such optical illusion happens. 3-4 times in the entire trip at various places, I felt that car was going what is visibly downward slope but without any pick-up so much so that I was afraid that it hasn’t gone in limp mode.

    20140617-DSC_3220.jpg 20140617-DSC_3221.jpg 20140617-DSC_3226.jpg

Saw Patthar Sahib Gurudwara from outside and reached Leh at around 6.15 pm. We were put up in a Hotel which is on Changspa road and the magnificent Shanti Stupa was visible from the room window. A group of HVK FB forum members, a biker group from Chennai was also at the same hotel. Took their feedback on hotels at Pangong for stay. Thanks to them we got a reference of an excellent hotel at Pangong. Excellent location – 5 stars.

Next day was for Car check-up/ service for half a day & Leh sights in balance time.
