Glimpses of what is going to come and remain with us for next 15 days....

    Here comes Sonamarg.....

    20140615-DSC_1311.JPG

Reached Sonmarg at 12 noon. The previous day, the gate to travel to Zojilla opened at 3.40 pm. So we had 2-3 hours to kill here. Went to Thajiwas glacier on horse back ride. Found out later that it was a wrong decision. Full of tourists, dirty snow and awfully time-consuming as it’s far from main road. Returned only at 2.45 pm and crossed the gate at 3 p.m. The gate and the road were completely clear, no trace of any vehicle queue. I think it might have opened in time at 2 pm or even before that. We should have first gone to the gate when we arrived at Sonmarg, checked about the status of opening and only then should have come back to Thajiwas.

    .....contd....Day 4, 15th June'14:

On the way to the mighty Zojilla….. In my extensive browsing before the trip, I read that Zojilla is relatively easier than Rohtang Pass. However, the “easiness” / “ease” is limited to absence of water streams & absence of surface full of or made up of big rocks. It was dry & there were no serious big size stones/ rocks posing threat to vehicle underbody. However, what it makes up for it is very steep ascent and the surface full of powdery soil. Even though, only one way traffic was allowed, there were long queue of trucks which were struggling to climb the combination of hairpin bends, steep ascent & deep powder soil. Twice, due to the truck ahead stopped, we had to brake and then the wheels start spinning in deep powdery soil on steep ascent until I reversed, gathered the required momentum and altered the tyre path a bit.

On top of Zojilla Pass, we had a customary brief photo shoot and then proceeded, it was evening by then. Since we had not taken Lunch, we stopped at an Army canteen after Zojilla for tea & snacks. The Samosa’s there are excellent J .

Post Sonmarg, my Vodafone connectivity was lost and we relied on sporadic connectivity of BSNL post-paid SIM we bought just for this trip.

Saw Tiger Hill & Tololing Range. Visited Drass War Memorial (Operation Vijay) – a humbling experience. Passed by Draupadi Kund and then Bhimbhut stone, didn’t go in the inside road to Bhimbat village to see Bhimbhut stone as it was getting late to reach Kargil.

Last 25-30 kms road to Kargil is awesome. Reached Kargil at around 9 pm. There was a long queue of vehicle traffic on the main road that goes thro’ Kargil town. Got the fuel filled at Fuel Pump on Leh road post exit of Kargil town (there is another Fuel pump just before entering Kargil – Nun Kun Auto).

Next day on the cards is the tough but awesome Zanskar Glacier Express.
