Which Mercedes is the Fastest: 1979 Mercedes 450 SEL or 2013 S350 CDI?

The 1979 Mercedes 450 SEL was the top of the range model of the W116 generation, the first of the large Mercedes saloons to be officially called the S-Class. Powered by a 6.8-liter V8 gasoline engine delivering 286 hp and 549 Nm (405 lb-ft) of torque, the 450 SEL was the late 1970’s equivalent of today’s S63 AMG.

On the opposite corner, there’s a 2013 Mercedes S350 CDI, a modern day S-Class powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel engine developing 258 horsepower and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) of torque. Judging from these figures, the drag race promises to be a balanced one. The old car has more power, while the new one has more torque.

Considering both weigh roughly the same, at just under 2 tons (4,409 lbs), the outcome of the duel is even more difficult to predict. Scroll down to watch the interesting drag race in the video below.

Drag Race of Generations and Fuels: E30 BMW M3 vs. F30 BMW 320d !!

The E30 M3 is probably BMW’s most iconic and most discussed model of modern times. Its perfect handling and balance makes it a favorite amongst BMW enthusiasts worldwide, as does its timeless styling. But how does its performance stand the test of time? More specifically, is it still fast enough to outpace a modern day regular BMW 3 Series diesel?
UK magazine Auto Express thought the only way to find out was to pit an E30 M3 Roberto Ravaglia edition against an F30 BMW 320d in a drag race. It’s important to mention that the E30 M3 Roberto Ravaglia edition has 212 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, while the 320d has 184 bhp and 380 Nm of torque.

Are you curious about the outcome? Then just scroll down to watch the video and find out for yourselves whether a 1989 E30 M3 can beat a 2013 F30 320d. Having already watched it, I can’t help but wonder how a standard 192 bhp BMW E30 M3 would do against the 320d.

End result was unexpected in both the cases. When car ages, heard that the transmission loss is more and the actual bhp numbers are lesser. This was a little surprising.
