Nato warns India, concerned about Italian marines

Nato warned India on Wednesday that using anti-terrorism legislation to try two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen would undermine international efforts to combat piracy.

India has announced its Supreme Court will hold a hearing next week on whether to charge marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone under its maritime security law, provoking criticism from the European Union and Italian authorities.

Won’t use tough laws against marines, Centre tells SC

The government told Supreme Court on Monday that it will not use a severe anti_piracy law when it tries two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen in 2012.

The Government attorneys told the apex court that the law, which carries the death penalty, will not apply in the case.

India has previously ruled out the possibility of a death penalty but said it would still prosecute the marines under the anti-piracy law.
