Check the video which confirms amp should be higher poweed than speakers for cleaner sound. Distortion at high volumes is coming from amp most times than speakers. To not fry the speakers the amp can be set at a little lower gain but amp should be of higher power than speakers.
    Was a learning for me.

    Hi adutt,

I too had read the transcript of the video from Crutchfield some time back. I think that it is a bit of selective information, and does not give the full picture.

I will refer you to another link which I think makes more convincing reading. It summarises the whole issue at the end. The main point is that if you play your amp/HU continuously above the rated wattage (approx 75 to 80% volume), clipping/distortion will start, which can damage speaker & amp. If the speaker wattage is more, then at least your speakers may not get damaged.

The point to keep in mind is that depending upon how loud you want to play your music, invest in a HU/amp that will deliver the required volume keeping within its rated wattage. The speakers must have adequate 'headroom' (as Zak from Crutchfield puts it), to absorb any inadvertent abuse.
