    Dear Friends,

I'm thankful to all those who have shown concern about my safety during the recent flood fury in J&K.

It all started on the first very day of September with torrential rains throughout the state. The flood alarms started coming on 5th and 6th September, people thinking of it as normal drain-blockade has resulted in water logging in streets of Srinagar city. Even, I called one of my friends to vacate the house on 6th Sept night (Saturday) because his locality was vulnerable though no such severe flood was experienced in that area for past 50 years. So my friend decided to stay there only and thought he would vacate next morning(Sunday) if needed. But, to his shock, he found that morning the water had entered the first storey of the house and it was about 10 feet high in the street and the level kept rising since then. This all happened due to river Jehlum breaching the embankments and engulfing whole city within no time with 25 feet high level at Rajbagh and Jawaharnagar(my friends locality). My friend along with his family was rescued from four-storey building adjoining his house on 11th Sept.

I'm staying in Hazratbal area where our NIT is located on the banks of famous Dal-lake about 13 kms away from city center. Though Dal-lake has links with River Jehlum, those are controlled by metallic gates, but the volume of water was such that these gates at Dal-gate broke down and the river embankment was also artificially blasted(broken) by the authorities at many places to divert it towards Dal-lake with the result Dal water level started rising fast. Though the lake acted as sink for next two days till 9th September with vertical rise of 6 feet making the lake full-bowl, hence the adjoining areas submerged, our NIT boys hostels were also in water at about 4-5 feet water entering the ground floor rooms. On 10th and 11th Sept, Dal water level further rose by 4-5 feet vertically that resulted in submerging of our residential quarters as well, water entering the ground floors. It was total of about 10-11 feet of vertical water level rise in usually calm Dal-lake.

But, prior to this we got enough time to shift our belongings to upper floors. Moreover, I had already shifted my T-Jet from the garage to a so called safer place at the campus, thank God water did not reach there, though it was very close. The garage received 2 feet of water latter after evacuating my Jet.

I'm sorry for not clicking all the story because all these days were sort of survival struggle to reach to safer places.

On 11th of September, after evacuating all the students to safer places, I also along with family accompanied by other four families left for Baramulla(leaving my Jet at the campus) in a mini-bus via Bandipur over the banks of another mighty lake called Wullar, thank God it was still acting as sink to incoming water from River Jehlum.

    With Best wishes,
    S A SHAH

    Dear @5u3zEr0 , @pabhishek , @varunrtr , @pv_krish , @MakeTheMove , @nkrishnap and @Ravi ,
Thank you all for feeling concerned and attached through this great forum.
Yes, it is time to leave gloom aside and strive ahead with the feeling that life is beautiful and colourful, because this calamity has taken the colours of nature away and left big scars of hopelessness. But, we have to come out of this depression by thinking of positive attitude and actions.
Hope to see the colourful attitudes prevailing again.
This is scene of 6th Sept....when worst was yet to come...

The Black and White marks shown on the metal-pole (in the picture posted above) got submerged in water when the level on the road rose further 5 feet vertically. That was the worst of the calamity.

My "SnowLeopard"was hurt due to reverse in dark and did not judge the metal pole standing at the back, the result was as...

Then the SnowLeopard rushed to the Service -center at Jammu, about 300 kms away through jungles and got repaired and serviced to look like as.. upload_2014-12-3_21-57-1.png

Hope it is enjoying back it's health...
