People would often be surprised what engines they are running.

Ford runs some of their own engines as well as Fiat and PSA engines (Peugeot/Citroen)

PSA run mainly their own engines but also a few Fiat engines. PSA also builds a number of Fiat and Ford models as well as for the Mini.

Fiat builds engines (some of them developed with General Motors) for a number of other manufacturers and builds some cars for other manufacturers (current Ford Ka).

Engine sharing as well as platform sharing is very common in the industries.

The days when manufacturers did their own things are long gone by.

First thing Fiat has invested a lot in the production Plant of engine, which it needs ROI , Even Fiats decent sales are there , IF its given to maruthi it will be collected faster so one part of it is solved . Second FIAT can establish own network chain in all cities ,More and more Publicity of FIAT engines will help in knowing engine which can attract customer for FIAT also.

How does the Swift compare to a Punto now when both are running the same mill? Vdi Vs Emotion?

get in the car roll up the window and ..

Start up the new swift you notice the diesel mill clatter with small vibration felt on steering wheel and body.

start up the new punto you notice muted hum (very less clatter) and negligible vibrations anywhere.

above speaks some part of refinement in engine. where one cannot deny that Fiat the creator of mjd knows their own engine better than Suzuki.

I think the variant name suggest the truth. One is Very Dull indeed and other is packed with Emotion.

I dunno mate. It's just a figment of my imagination. That premier might give a ''snazzy'' name to the Multijet.

For DDIs, Google says "Direct Diesel Injection System".

If Premier decides to follow Tata's footstep, they can think about HexaJet, OctaJet, or something like that. :D
