I've a habit of pulling up Handbrake while parking. I never park with gears engaged, am always afraid that when someone else other than me starts the car and he may not be careful to notice engaged gear. Paranoid, but that's how it is.

That is the reason why I never handover my car key to anybody even at places where there is Valet Parking. :D
    I park myself.

Actually this is the way, most people park the car. Before reading the manual even I was in impression that Handbrake is the correct way to park.
However, I have changed my habit now and use gear for long parking (if any, I have parked my car for long > 5 days, only once in last 3 years).

Ramesh, (J) Ravi et all thanks for your valuable inputs. I shall start using gears for my overnight and office parking - basic rule of thumb I shall employ is no handbrake for anything more than 4 hours.

For overnight parking I use handbrake. I have to change this habit now. I thought every one follow this.

When i park my car for the night. I usually engage only the handbrakes (as my beauty sleeps in a garage) . On the streets I put the car to 1st gear and engage handbrakes and then leave the car, for double safety.
95% of the times i only park my car even if there is valet parking available but sometimes its just not possible.
(I don't like the way those idiots treat my baby)

I also follow the same, never parked with gears engaged but after reading post related to this I have started following what is suggested by fellow TFI'ians (started parking with gear engaged). But as perfection (read old habits) die hard, I forget to dis-engage the gear and every time when I crank the engine my baby gets a jerk, it really hurts and I feel guilty :(

With few days of practice, i should get use to dis-engaging the gear!

Another practice specified in the owner's handbook is to depress the clutch pedal while starting the engine both for petrol and diesel versions. So, by this way, even by mistake, if the car is in gear, it will not get any jerk, while starting with the gear engaged.

Is there some specific logic behind not using hand brake while parking overnight? I mean handbrake seem pretty effective. Moreover if you park on flat surface, I wouldn't see a need of either gears or wooden wedges. Can somebody explain please?
