Esskay Fiat, the only Fiat dealer for South Mumbai is now no longer an authorised Fiat dealer. This is based on news seen recently in the Time of India (the ad was too small to be noticed). Esskay will no longer sell or service any Fiat vehicles or provide any spares or repair work.

Now Mumbai/navi Mumbai/Thane region are left with 3 dealers - Balaji Fiat (Thane +Navi Mumbai), Torrid and RS motors.

This is not auguring good news especially at a time when Fiat is gearing to introduce some new models particularly Abarth Punto, possible Abarth Linea too and the Jeep variants (if at all they plan too). Quite recently a well known and admired Fiat dealer in Pune Pandit Auto also closed its door for Fiat vehicles. At a time when Fiat should be expanding their network such news dampen their sales and put a question mark in the probable Fiat buyers too about Fiat's intention to ramp up their image.

I always felt that the dealership expansion was too aggressive considering the sales of Fiat cars. Now it seems like the dealer rationalizing is going on. In a way it is good that the ones who will still run the dealership at least remain profitable and give a proper pre sales as well as post sales experience.

However, the inconvenience to the existing customers is a given when the dealers shut shop.

The issue is South Mumbai customer is of a different psyche, many uppity but paying types. So they will need a dealer who can cater to their whims a bit. Not having a dealership in prominent zones, makes you less visible among the hip and corporate also who throng there. The budding youth of tomorrow hangs out there, in those areas. In short you are not trending a company or brand if you are not in South Mumbai.

It is probably best if Fiat starts a grand cafe there. And a smaller self operated showroom for regular cars like Punto and Linea.

Although importantly its best that Esskay shut shop because IMHO it was damaging the brand than helping it.
