Comparison Of Tuning Boxes

  1. Update

    There is a long debate on the accuracy of GPS services in Phones.
    We tested them against a V-Box.
    The results -

    I-Phone is having an error of close to 3%.
    Nokia phones have an error of less than 1%.

  3. We did some initial rounds of testing.
    Full range of testing was not done due to the turmoil in Hyderabad.
    Top speeds,acceleration tests were done as of now.
    Mileage, Pollution needs to be done.
    As expected the 3 new boxes were better in all the parameters.
    The name of the new box will be announced in a day or 2.
    Stay tuned.

    We do not have an Android or BB at our disposal.
    If we are able to source 1 we'll check that.

    V box will be anytime accurate than any GPS devices.

    You are right.
    The V-Box is accurate than the GPS phones.
    However the variation depends on the weather & options we are testing.

    For example -
    On a sunny day the Nokia phones were showing an error anywhere from 0.2% to 0.3% in the top speed.
    Where as in the 0-100 runs the difference was 0.4% to 0.8%.

    When it was cloudy with mild showers the error has gone up to 0.3% to 0.4% in top speed.
    The 0-100 runs showed a a difference of 0.7%-0.9%.

    This can be clearly explained by the fact that the Nokia phones work at 1Hz where as the most Basic V-box works at 10Hz.
    However both of them require a minimum of 4-5 satellites to lock on the signal.

    who is the manufacturer?

    i would say that the tests will be very good if you determine the principle of working of each box and how much fuel supply they are altering.

    to sum up long term detrimental effects on the engine can also be determined.

    The Supplier is from Banglore.
    They seem to be importing the boxes from Europe.
    It is a TUV certified box.
    They are tuning the box here for the car & selling it.

    All the Tuning boxes are similar in working i.e., Tampering the rail pressure by fooling the ECU.
    As a standard practice all the boxes are being tuned conservatively for around 10-15% of increase in the pressure.
    IF you want higher then, they can alter the pressure by upto 30% depending on your requirement.
    If you want lower also most of them can do ( for mileage gains - taxis & highway cruisers).

    The effects on engine depend on the tune one opts for.
    If you opt for higher power you are taxing the engine.
    Also with higher power if you drive more aggressively then it shows the effects.

    This is the general consideration in every mechanical design..this is called Factor of safety (this is generally more for life critical application) but this has its own purpose..this means that in any case if your loading goes beyond a certain working limit you can still withstand it...and when you are using out this safety factor for normal use then there are high chances of parts failure...do you know that the loads due to impact loading are almost double the gradual loading...

    Thanks. But not all boxes rely on just altering the rail pressure.

    there are better boxes which along with altering rail pressure do alter the turbo boost too. they connect to both turbo sensors and common rail sensors.

    this is way better than just connecting to the common rail

    getting a TUV certificate is very easy. they merrily print TUV certified on their boxes. the TUV is for the process and quality of box, not for the tuning map of the box.
