Quick medical attention in the event of accidents, effective crime control and detection and real-time enforcement of road rules will soon become a reality on the 80-km stretch of the GST Road.

Speed dome cameras will be installed from Chengelput to Tindivanam, a stretch where accidents have become common.

The cameras will be linked to a control room with huge screens to display live footage, S. Rajendran, Additional Director-General of Police, State Traffic Planning Cell, told The Hindu .

    Golden hour
Costing Rs. 1.7 crore, the cameras would generate footage, which, in the event of an accident, would alert the control room to ensure timely medical assistance, especially trauma care, to victims during the golden hour.

    Extension
In addition, the control room would be able to plan how to intercept and apprehend the accused when offences were committed either on the highway or elsewhere, Mr. Rajendran said. This pilot project would be fine-tuned and extended to other major national and State highways in phases.

The cameras and their real-time syncing with the control room would also help in identifying motorists resorting to over-speeding or drunken driving, he said.

The work was expected to begin soon, and it could take 18-24 months for completion, he said.

To my knowledge, I think the max speed limit on 4 laned highways is 100 kmph.

1.7cr seems steep, but these maybe special cameras, like wireless cameras maybe.

What about the high-speed highway patrol cars. No mention of the same. Used in Germany on Autobahns. Maybe useful here as well.

We don't know how many cameras are being planned for this 80 km stretch. And it also includes the cost of setting up of the centralized monitoring facility as well.

Ever seen the cameras at Camp Road junction and all the junction, all these are for namesake and aren't being leveraged at all. Hopefully they will increase the speed limit to something more sensible than 80.

Hope they are opting a tried and tested system from the vendors/suppliers.

There are so many camera's in many major junctions in Madras but I doubt they work or are being used because there are traffice violations taking place right there. I hope they actually use this if it is installed (18-24 months is a long time) and fine violators without any delay. The speed limit should be 100km/h. 80km/h would be too less.

Has anything of this kind happened? I travel frequently in the GST road, at lease once a month towards Thindivanam, but yet to see anything installed and being monitored.

Did you read the above sentence too? It was expected to begin soon. Don't know the exact duration associated with the term 'soon'. :D
