Saw the following on NDTV today (24/03/2011) morning.

Pakistan reach World cup semi finals, on course for a clash with India.

My question is how did NDTV know on the morning of 24/03/2011 that India is going to reach the semi finals?!

I hope this was a typo. Anyway, we will know in a few hours if this was a mistake or a goof up. Did NDTV spill the beans on some secret they knew off in advance!!

Car-makers face challenges from Japan crisis, rate hikes

Mumbai, Mar 23 (PTI) Faced with surging raw material costs, Indian car-makers now face three additional serious challenges, including a shortage of key components, which could impact their performance this year.

While they could pass on the burden of increased input costs to customers, a shortage of components, compounded by the March 11 tsunami and quake in Japan and the Reserve Bank''s latest rate hike -- which could affect car financing -- have made them jittery over their prospects in the short-to-medium term.

"Yes, the industry is facing problems, but we are taking it as a big challenge. We think this is a passing phase -- we see light at the end of tunnel," General Motors India Vice-President P Balendran told PTI here.

A shortage of critical components, many of them sourced from Japan where many automobile facilities, besides others, have been damaged by the powerful quake and tsunami, has made the going tough for the industry, which is likely to find it difficult to meet its sales targets, he said.

"Frankly, it is difficult to meet earlier projected (sales) figure this time. A shortage of components, including tyres, casting and steel, has made things difficult," he said.

The hike in key rates by the Reserve Bank, which is expected to push up interest rates on auto loans, could deter potential buyers, Balendran said.

The General Motors executive said, "It is difficult to predict a timeline for the problems to be resolved." Home-grown auto major Mahindra & Mahindra is confident of the long-term potential of the industry, but feels the sector is likely to be stymied by the Japan crisis and RBI rate hike in the short-term. .

  5. Freebies rain on TN voters India Blooms News Service

Chennai, Mar 25 (IBNS) Its raining freebies in poll-bound Tamil Nadu as the two major parties in the state – ruling DMK and Opposition AIADMK – try to outbid each other in offering dollops if voted to power.
From free laptops to ‘mangalsutras’ to rice and grinders – the two parties have promised something or the other for all sections, particularly women and youth.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazagham (DMK), in its election manifesto, has gone a step ahead from promising colour TVs in its 2006 manifesto.

Karunanidhi’s party has this time promised of free laptops to all 11th and 12th standard students, 20 kg of free rice to all ration card holders and for all women, mixer and grinder free of charge.

The party has also promised free bus travel to senior citizens.

The manifesto also promised continuation of all welfare schemes implemented by the DMK government including free distribution of colour TVs and Rs one per kg of rice.

Not to be outdone, J Jayalalithaa, whose AIADMK has been sitting in the Opposition benches, has matched every DMK promise with more additions.

The AIADMK has added a free fan to the mixers and grinders on offer by DMK to house-wives.

For educated girls, marriage gift from the AIADMK would be Rs 50,000, 500 gms of gold and a ‘mangalsutra’.

The free laptops to students are also there in the AIADMK list of promises, beside rice at highly subsidized rates.

Cows and goats have also been promised by the Opposition party, if voted to power.

The state goes to the polls on April 13 and counting is slated on May 13.
