  2. Chennai, Mar 1 (PTI News) :
DMK government in poll-bound Tamil Nadu today announced a three per cent cut in sales tax on petrol that would make it cheaper by Rs 1.38 a litre. Chief Minister M Karunanidhi made the announcement a day after the presentation of the Union budget which skirted the demand for reduction of customs duty and sales tax on fuel prices amidst soaring global crude rates. "The government has decided to levy only 27 per cent as against 30 per cent as sales tax on petrol. This will result in a loss of Rs 210 crore for the exchequer annually but will bring down the price of petrol by Rs 1.38 per litre," he said in a statement here. He said the tax cut would be with immediate effect and the new rate of 27 per cent was the lowest among southern states. Explaining the rationale behind the tax cut, that comes ahead of state Assembly election due in April-May, Karunanidhi said it was done to ensure that two-wheeler users did not feel the pinch of 'frequent' hike of fuel prices by oil companies. "Since global crude rates are on the upswing, oil companies also revise the prices accordingly which affect middle-classes to a large extent," and this was the reason the government slashed sales tax on fuel on different occasions, Karunanidhi said. He recalled that his government had slashed sales tax on diesel and petrol on previous occasions also when fuel prices were hiked.

Fiat says to produce 300,000 cars a year in Russia
    25 Feb, 2011, 2313 hrs IST, AGENCIES

MILAN: Italian auto giant Fiat outlined plans on Friday to produce 300,000 cars per year in Russia, just days after it was replaced by Ford in a partnership there with Russian automobile group Sollers.

Fiat said it had sent a memorandum of intent to the Russian government that "envisages the establishment of manufacturing capacity for up to 300,000 vehicles per year," including passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

"The Fiat and (Chrysler) Jeep brands will be the mainstay of this project ... This plan will be accompanied by a commitment to further expand and strengthen Fiat's dealer network," the Italian company said in a statement.

Fiat is merging with US auto giant Chrysler and has outlined plans for expansion in emerging markets. Industry analysts said the fall-out with Sollers may have happened after Fiat tried to drive too hard a bargain.

Fiat announced last month that it had returned to profit in 2010, beating analyst forecasts. It enjoyed strong sales of lorries and tractors, with the Brazilian market performing particularly well.

  10. Butt seeks inquiry into Warne's 'tie' prediction of India-England WC match
    News : Sify

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ijaz Butt has called for a strict inquiry into Australian spin legend Shane Warne's prediction of tie about the India-England World Cup match.

India and England set alight the 2011 World Cup on Sunday after a record-breaking run-feast ended in a dramatic tie on the last ball of the match played at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore.

Warne had predicted the result via Twitter before the match began. "Looking forward to the game between India and England, today should be a cracker. My prediction [is] a tie!" he wrote on Twitter.

After the match was over, Warne wrote: "Can't believe my prediction 7/8 hours ago was right ... didn't think it would happen but hey, not bad."

Butt urged the matter to be taken up in an ICC meeting to be held in Mumbai, Geo News reported.

Expressing anger over the prediction, he said the matter should be strictly dealt with, and that Pakistan would discuss this issue in the upcoming ICC meeting.

Butt spoke positive about the fate of the Pakistan cricket team in the ongoing World Cup. Pakistan, though going great, still needs improvement in the fielding and bowling sections, he added. (ANI)
