At the Detroit Auto Show, just concluded, FCA/marchionne announced then following all-new models, including approximate dates of launch and the plants and platforms on/at which they'll be made. All-new Wrangler 2-door and Unlimited etc: end-2017/early-2018, Toledo Ohio, at a retooled old Jeep 'home' plant with now expanded capacity in order to meet its large hitherto unmet-due-to-capacity-constraints export/global demand. Marchionne says it's a perfect car and fully authentic to the Jeep 4x4 heritage, but without the harsh ride+low FE penalties anymore. All-new Wrangler-sibling lifestye 4x4-low pickup: Toledo Ohio. End-2018/2019. Fully refreshed facelifted and upgraded Jeep Cherokee: Belvidere Michigan, moving from Toledo. China-only long-wheelbase 7-seat Jeep Cherokee, with a chrysler softroader version for the usa built alongside the cusw Cherokee at the Belvidere plant. Both of these: end 2017/early 2018. All-new Jeep Grand Cherokee, for 2019, to be most like built he said on the new ultra light and super stiff etc rwd Alfa 'Giorgio' platform (scalable), twinned to the Alfa Stelvio and the upcoming larger Alfa e-suv, albeit with Jeep-special 4x4 hardware and software. Jefferson, Michigan (the plant will be fully retooled and automated along the bleeding edge lines of the Giulia Alfa plant at Cassino Italy. It will be twinned to an all new Dodge Durango 7-seater (ewb), with non-jeep suspension. All-new Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer: the return of the world's original luxury 4x4 suv-s. Identical models, with the GW being uber-luxe appointed. Body-on-Frame new RAM 1500 (2018) pickup truck chassis, with a likely (like the Fiat Ducato) a half b-o-f and half-unibody construction. Built alongside the new 2018 Ram 1500 at Warren Truck, Michigan: 2019. A major export model-twins as well. NOTE: (a) scale efficiencies achieved via sharing across brands of 'platforms' and most 'architectural' elements (barring 4x4 hardware and software.) Sharing of engineering expertise with the Italians at Alfa/Fiat. (b) absolute maxing-out of usa factory capacity utilization at the upgraded usa plants. Increased export supplies and employment. ERGO: a hit with right-wing nationalist Trump and the 'left wing'/Democrat UAW trade union. (c) only high margin, high-usp and high-authenticity models, and that too only cuv, suv and pickups to be made in the usa, with very little outside of luxury/sports Ferraris, maseratis and Alfa-s imported into the usa by fca. FCA has stopped making any sedans whatsoever in the usa. Even one or two of the Dodge muscle-car sedans will likely be imported from Italy, built alongside the Alfa-s on the new Alfa-platform. By doing so FCA achieves: (a) growth in sales and profitability EVEN AS/IF the usa market slows/recedes (b) lowered cost of manufacture via scale economies/sharing (eg with Alfa, dodge, Ram) and (c) manages what American automakers have historically been so dismal at: large, premium-priced and quality exports against Toyota and the German firms.
