I don't how many of you guys have realised that the best ever 1.2-litre petrol hatch that India has ever got is the 1.2-litre Palio. The torque is easily available in almost all rpm range and its fun car to drive in city and highways. Average is also 10kpl which is what most of the European hatchbacks give, considering the mere fact that their raw power comes in late at higher rpms which makes it difficult to drive in city traffic. Take, even the Fiat Grande Punto, the 1172cc engine doesn't even produce 70bhp. If Fiat gets back its Palio 1.2-litre engine in the Grande Punto, it will beat most of its competition.

my dear friend paliofan, Punto 's 1.2 engine is the best 1.2 litre engine currently in indian market. it not important how much you have but its important how you use what you have. Punto 's 1.2 is best tuned to give performance and mileage. although its plonked in a heavy car it gives max torque at 2500 rpm and it very good to drive on the highways too touching 150 kmph speed with ease. no other car can do it. and i think the most fuel efficient cars are made by Fiat and not by maruti. all the small cars from maruti and hyundai or any other car gives approx same or less mileage than Punto 1.2.

Sumit, I have had the 1.2 Punto with me for a week, its good on highways and city too. But it lacks that extra power when you need, and thats readily available on the 1.2 Palio engine. This is where the difference lies, most of the 1.2-litre engines that are sold today deliver some good amount of power in a limited rev range and the Palio engine's torque is available in more rev range. Hope you get what I'm trying to convey.

My top speed with 5 adults is around 160 kph. Best milleage I got is 19.6 kpl on highway with 5 adults , 100% AC off, speed around 80 kph, distance 160 kms.

My car is giving whatever I need so I can say Punto'a 1.2 L engine is the best one.

Paliofan agreed to what you are trying to tell. but remember although Palio 1.2 was the best, it quickly got the image of fuel guzzler. and a wonderful car like Palio got destroyed. Fiat is more cautious this time and dont what repeat its mistakes. so Punto 1.2 is tuned in way to produce max performance and FE. indians are obessed with 'mileage'.

Sumit, my Palio returns about 10-10.5km/l, which isn't bad at all considering the other 1.2-litre European hatchs. and Palio beats them hands down when it comes to performance.

palio fan, i agree to what u say, in terms of performance palios are best. it has best initial, midrange as well as top, very much stable at corners. but the performance alone will the make the best cars. punto is designed to meet everyone's requirement. power, mileage, space, exterior looks, interior looks, driver's car, competitive price. hence you can call it as upgraded version of palio. and punto is still not meeting all the requirements such as resale value, easily available after market parts, etc. punto is released as a passenger car and not as sports car to see its peak power. and now it is giving a perfect competition to other brand cars in its segment. and i agree palio 1.6sport/gtx is still the fastest hatchback in India. and i am proud i own it.

If you say Punto 1.2 is a bit sluggish than Palio 1.2, then it is for the sake of mileage and may be emission norms too.

P.S: Paliofan: If your Palio 1.2 gives 10.5 kmpl, then how much can we expect mileage from Palio 1.6 and Punto 1.4???

I believe the "FE expectations" from are as below
    Punto 1.4: 11-13kmpl
    Punto 1.2: 13-15kmpl
If you go through the FE thread, most users are getting in this range and some are able to do better. Compared to Palio 1.2, the Punto 1.2 gives almost 35-40% more FE.

First of all : I DO NOT agree with the statement that all hatches with a 1.2L engine give 10 kmpl (and I am talking about ALL hatches : not ONLY european) And with all due respect : a FE of 10 kmpl in today's times for a hatchback is pretty poor.

The title of this thread talks about ALL 1.2 Litre petrol cars comparison so let's talk about ALL 1.2 litre petrol cars.

I have a Ritz 1.2 with the K-series engine and it gives above 10 kmpl (initially it gave 10 but now it has improved to 13). The power it gives out is 85 BHP and it is one heck of a car to drive.

I don't quite understand the purpose of this thread. Why are you comparing a Palio to a Punto ? And why the emphasis on proving that "Palio is the best" ?
