Its always curious to hear about an accident but the grim truth is that India leads the rest of the world (it has overtaken china since 2009) when it comes to the number of accidents per year. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the number of road accidents taking place annually has now passed the 1,35,000 mark (July 15 2012) – which works out to a chilling average of 15 accidents per hour every day.

According to the Transport Research Wing (TRW) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Government of India) has furnished the data, highlighting not only the number of fatalities and casualties, but also the variation of the trend over time. Needless to say, the trend is alarming. The number of accidents is growing slowly but steadily, year after year. Trucks and two-wheelers are involved in more than 40% deaths, while the afternoon and evening rush hours constitute the period with the maximum rate of accidents.

    stats.jpg

If the above figures weren’t gruesome enough, here’s worse news – the numbers mean an average of one road accident per minute, and one road accident death every four minutes, everyday.

The NCRB states that a large majority of these incidents are caused by drunken driving.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also sketched out a list of causes for the accidents it records.

These numbers, however, do not represent the entire picture. There are quite a few accidents that go unrecorded, most often because they do not take place in known accident-prone areas. Also, a number of people injured in road accidents succumb to their injuries a few days after the accident, and such deaths are not categorized as results of road accidents.

These statistics are enough to set alarm bells ringing – it is time to stop saying “Something must be done”, rather, spread the attitude of “We must do something, We will do something” to make our roads safer, to abolish the dark cloud that seems to linger above our roads, growing darker every year. If we all work together, the day will not be far away when the sunlight breaks through the clouds and shines bright on our roads again.

@Surya - very passionately said. We live in a make believe world, where an online forum has a tachometer showing redline, but advocates against speeding, members get dead drunk in meets, but still prohibits saying anything about alcohol in a bottle - even aftershave and cough syrup are frowned upon.

I was an unfortunate victim of road rage once. I was on a bicycle, wanting to make a right turn, but promptly stopped at a signal as it turned amber, when this car pulled up right behind me and started honking. I just ignored and waited for green. Eventually, when the signal turned green and I started making the turn, the impatient driver overtook me, almost knocking me down and for good measure flipped the finger at me. Ironically, the rear bumper had a sticker of a popular online forum which read "I drive safe" !!!! When I went and posted on that forum complaining about such behaviour the thread was promptly locked :D. And before any one asks, no I am not banned on any forum. I am just mature enough to call a spade a spade.

Bottomline - we need to stop being armchair advocates of road safety and not only start practicing it ourselves, but should also educate others about it.

@ALL FIATians on this forum - How about we do a safe driving rally of some sort in our respective cities and promote road safety?

@ patchyboy, that shows people are just part of so called prestigious forum for show off!

I have a different experience to share. Recently had a very good experience with a Figo guy. I was returning from Davangere to Bangalore via NH 4 (Davangere to Blore is @ 275 kms). Mid way through caught up with a Goa registered Figo and we almost drove (note: not race) wheel to wheel for @ 100 kms distance together. Couple of times he let me go and on other occassions I let him. It was total fun! They say Figo has minimal turbo lag, its faster than Punto etc etc, but this guy was struggling to keep pace with Punto on many occassions! Once in turbo zone, no need to explain Punto's capabilities :dancing But what really surprised me was Punto's ability to pull away from Figo even while accelerating from low speeds. (mind you, mine is 76 bhp Punto)

Then finally we ended up stopping for a coffee break at the same restaurant (Kamat Upachar, btw Tumkur & Blore). Both of us exchanged pleasantries and admired each other's rides. He was driving from Goa to Bangalore. In the days of road rage, this was one of rare good highway experience that too with a stranger. :up

If people can set aside their ego and enjoy their drive, roads will be so much more fun and safer place to be!

sounds like a very good idea.. But like all other public addressals there is going to be one flaw even in this idea.. That is no one really cares after this..
We run on MG road on word AIDS day , world cancer day and what not..
What good has come from it? There is no credible source of info regarding this..

If we want to make a start somewhere then i suggest we all drive our fiats like you put it on a safety drive and do something more credible . Like talk to the cops and ensure traffic violators are fined heavily , Speak to the RTO about this .
Most importantly .. Follow up on this idea with the cops putting constant pressure to make sure they do something about this

There have been many occations these kind of incidents have happened, Especially at night, have tailed some car for long distances, to avoid the glare from oncoming vehicles, and they ve been co operative as well, my friend have followed a Govt of kerala innova from tvm to cochin and they exchanged a hi fi when they parted at cochin !! Recently when i was driving from kollam to tvm, i saw another punto and tailed him for almost full distance, after which i lost him due to traffic. In between, in a signal, he passed but i was stuck in a red signal, i thought he must have gone as he was literally flying in those roads, surprisingly, he was driving slow after that for me to catch up or so.. lol !! :p

For the last three years, we are conducting road safety and awareness campaign here in trivandrum . Even though, the results are not optimistic , it had made a mark to say the least. Everybody discouraged us when we planned for the first time in 2010 saying that we are wasting out time, but when we put forward this to police, he transport Circle Inspector was overwhelmingly supportive, even though others just shunned the idea. He offered al kinds of support from their side including escort vehicles and after first year, he himself would ask us , " when are you going to do it nxt time?" . The ads by police in radio and tv are not making a big impact with us , rather we take it jokingly, but activities like this will make them look into it.

The result of the attempt, though could not be recorded or analysed, is that we are now seeing a lot more young guys investing in good helmets, atleast they think that it makes them look more sexy with it rather than without it. I believe 40-50% of guys in my college who comes in premium bikes who never wore helmets bought these flashy helmets(not cheap roadside ones) when i went recently. I saw a lot of people in technopark wearing good riding gears . These sights atleast gives us a sense of satisfaction that our efforts didnt go in vain. The online revolution has a big role to play in the change thats happening. A major chunk of people as they themselves say cannot be changed whatever happens, but the emphasis was aimed at rest of the guys. In this fast paced world, we are not understanding the fact that there is not time to make mistakes and then learn from it, but its better to learn from others mistakes . During the course of act, we saw many discouraging factors, sarcastic looks and comments from people of all age groups But at the end, at least our parents and a section of the people will understand that anyone riding with the helmet and all other riding gear is not going for racing but is riding safe. The police everywhere used to look at us with suspicious eyes during group rides and when riding in city with gears, but now it has changed a lot as they are seeing this for the last couple of years. Still, the message has to penetrate into the larger section of the society, even after giving ample publicity through radio, papers, the attitude of the people towards this concept is not changing, which has a very long way to go.
