Legendary director-cinematographer Balu Mahendra, who died in Chennai on February 13, 2014, is a pioneer of realistic cinema in Tamil.

A native of Amirthakali near Mattakalappu in Sri Lanka, Mr. Mahendra came to India to study at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. He studied cinematography as he could not get admission in the other specialisations offered and graduated with a gold medal in 1969.

“I used to cut my cinematography classes and attend classes conducted by the departments of direction, screenplay writing and editing. However, I would to get the top rank in cinematography, so the professor did not mind it. My main concern at the time was direction and scripting with a little bit of cinematography,”

    - He entered Bollywood with Sadma starring Kamal Hassan and Sridevi. The film remained one of the best movies of Balu Mahendra.

    - The highlight of his direction was he himself edited and handled the camera. It is because he wanted to have the full control over his films.

    - Balu Mahendra won five National Awards, four Filmfare Awards, two State Awards each from Kerala and Andhra governments and one Karnataka State Award.

    Kamal Hassan on his death

I am not flabbergasted by his death as I know this will come to all of us. My only worry is that he could have done more films. But it’s all compensated by the students he has left in his wake. I think more than the sad part of missing a man like Balu Mahendra, what supersedes that is the great moments I had with him. I would rather celebrate those moments than mourn his death.

Had I met him on his deathbed, I would have told him, “Don’t worry Balu, your work will live on.”

Also IMHO, Illayaraja's best music came out in Balu Mahendra's movies!

Balu Mahendra excelled in acting too, apart from cinematography, editing and direction. His acting in his last movie Thalaimuraigal [Generations] was very realistic. In that movie, he dies at the end. I did not expect that he would meet his end in his real life too within a few weeks after release of his film.
