Good write up sid. Only let down from the dashboard is the stone age plain look. The center panel would have gotten more creative work on it to look eye catchy ;)

CHAPTER 13-THE ENGINE, TRANSMISSION AND ITS PERFORMANCE

    421936_550249025009387_1241181569_n.jpg

Hmm..been a long time since something has been posted here...actually I've been kinda waiting to let the engine cross more kilometres and hence, to judge it more and understand this complex piece of machinery.
The car has crossed 7500 plus kms today, and its now a good time to judge the multijet's tuning in the '12 GP from my senses.
I think that Fiat has done a fine job of tuning the motor for everyday usage, but its no meant for straghtline acceleration, rather its focused more towards driveability and efficiency. The car develops 76 ps and 197 nm, but its the inconsistent gearbox that needs to be reworked. There are some good points, but things also need improvement. My car's first service was completed at oberoi sector 63 at 4987 km which saw an engine oil, oil filter, air filter change, alignment and balancing and other routine things required to keep the car in top shape. The engine opened up after that and felt more refined and smoother.

The first gear is short and almost feels dead in an open road. Though in the city, there is some lag felt, I always upshifted to 2nd which is actually a bit taller than the 2011 punto. Acceleration is strong but power delivery is linear. The torque curve is strong and the car is very user friendly in day to day driving compared, to, say a polo or fabia which suffer from turbo lag and compromise in driveability. The swift is actually faster but only when accelerated hard. It too feels dead at gear 1 and 2. Third gear gives the car more character, and its easy to potter along from speeds as low as 35 to as high as say 80-90, its that wide. To avoid overstraining, I normally upshift which also helps in fuel efficiency but show an open highway, and its clear that the car feel strained when it starts crossing 120. A close ratio 6 speed GB would have made drastic changes to its character, say like a stock 90 VGT which does not feel that strained. In fact, driveability in 5th gear is so good that the car climbs flyovers with ease and in gear acceleration is one of the strongest points of the car.
Recently, I had a chance to go for some drag racing at Delhi tech university (under safe controlled environment with safety as first priority) and there I decided to gauge how much my car can accelerate in stock. The weight and GB tuning was clearly visible when it raced against some tuned hatchbacks (i20s, swifts, some petrol cars and even a tuned punto 76 which got defeated) and at least the car kept momentum. Intelligent gearshift timings and perfect launch without excessive wheelspin can make a lot of differences to the track timings.

The GB's shift quality is somewhat above average. Not really jap smooth, but decent, if a l'il rubbery.
I have heard of engines opening up more once it crosses 10k kms, so will see how it responds then. The engine is refined overall and the new NVH package has improved inside noise, but I still find the 90 to be more silent from the inside. The audio upgrade, planned for July, will also get some high quality damping to minimise unwanted noise.

The best efficiency I got was 24.2 kmpl on an open highway, worst I coaxed was 8.7 kmpl at the drags and city with AC hovers around 15-16 kmpl. Combined FE I got was a consistent 18-19 kmpl.

Once again great review Sid! I agree that Punto is much more driveable than Fabia / Polo in city traffic. Had a torrid time with turbo lag in Fabia during my test drive. Thought any time the vehicle at behind might rear end.

After crossing 10k kms recently, I have felt that engine has opened up a bit. Though no major difference noted while driving. One change observed is that now the car is slightly eager to reach speeds of 130s-140s from 90s-100s. Engine revvs at that speed is tad smoother than what it was before. Waiting for your 10k kms detailed review :up

  4. With passing kms the gear shift smoothens, people say the first two gears are a pain, but I really never found that as an issue..keep an eye on the speedo in the first two gears, it does fine,I even find it if not better easily comparable to swift D's performance...

Its really tough to find competent car detailing specialists in Delhi NCR, we aren't lucky to have a 3M outlet here unlike the southern parts of the country. Still, there is a petrol pump just a km from my house which has done a tieup with steam and shine and has done detailing in my car today, which is close to 6 months old and has done 8000 km now. There were lots of superficial scratches which are gone, after a steam wash plus buffing plus interior/ exterior detailing and paint sealent using 3M mcGuire polishes. The whole job took 4 hours and the car is now spanking clean and shin. Costed Rs. 4500 in total. This is the same guy who laid a helping hand in keeping my old santro in top notch condition aesthetically (pictured below at 1.25L kms). Clicked these shots of the GP an hour back from my galaxy S3.
