re: FIAT Exclusive Service Center: RDC Fiat, Chennai

Got a reply from Mangesh that he is doing the needful.

Got a call from RDC by 6 30 saying that the car is ready. I ask what was the issue, tensingh was reluctant to answer that. He said he will explain to me in person. He said no parts were replaced. Will take a TD first thing tomorrow morning and post the update here. I hope they have not resolved to any cheap tactic like manipulating the waste gate.

There is something really wrong the "new" FASS. That is what I felt after seeing my bill today for drive shaft and engine mount replacement. The bill was thoroughly confusing, mentions parts I did not replace, and doesnt mention parts I actually replaced. The SA was calling too many people discussing about parts, prices, labor etc as if he is a newbie there. When I asked about items in the bill he was saying like "elastic pad for suspension was weak so that is replaced, assembly rubber hanger had issue so replaced that" etc. There is no mention of A mounting bracket that is replaced. As long as issues are resolved to my satisfaction, I dont care.
When FIAT gets invloved in the issue, they are tensed and worried.

Very sorry to read what you have been going through the past week. Its horrible to say the least. The RDC guys needs a whip on their backs to get their act together and provide the requisite service levels. Please do a detailed test drive and check if the issue persists. If you find it resolved, do get it checked to your satisfaction when you are here in Bangalore. Do drop a PM if you need help.

Which service center is this? Only FASS in Bangalore is Vecto Motors . Which ever FASS it is, you have every right to know what work is done on your car. They simply cannot hide it. If the service centers folks are honest and professional they will definitely update you with every thing that is done on the car.

It is not Vecto, which I am yet to visit. I should probably say todays TASS, tomorrows FASS :). Anyways, I paid for only what was actually done on my car. This is the second reason why I said I dont care.

Guys, collected the car back today without even TDing it. I mean anyways, it's a vicious cycle which haunts me, I would take a TD and say no change and my car would again go in to the back of the queue. Why the trouble?

Anyways, drove the car and found almost no change, there is marginally better pickup, the sink in the seat turbo feeling is absolutely not there. On the drive back from office, tried pressing the pedal to the metal in 2 and 3 gears but no action. I even turned off the AC to reduce the load on the engine. 75HP users, please provide your input, I have been living with this problem for long and have almost forgotten that awesome feeling. Before this problem, the kick used to be prominent in the second and third gears with even 70% of throttle input. But now, even with 100% nothing. And RDC says me they tightened few clamps. Usual bakwaas reply.

Both our Puntos are not visiting RDC again. Period.

Is the Turbo working or not? Are they not able to diagnose this? This leaves me surprising.

If I were you, even I would have taken the same decision of not visiting RDC again.

I'm not entirely sure about the pining to the seat because it happens only during 2nd gear above 2000 RPM. I would recommend a fellow 75HP owner TD it back to back and may be nail it down. Do you also have the OBD port reader?

@DRIV3R, my advise to you would be to take the RDC off your mind for time being. Continue driving and do everything normally and also dont keep focusing on your machine. Just think that you dont have the time for service and continue to use your car. I know you may find it difficult to follow this advise if you are a perfectionist, but then you can always give other methods a try.

I advise all mjd owners to drive the engine normally and not gingerly. The turbos have to spin well and they need good rpms to be in fit condition. They are all very good components from manufacturers of repute and dont fail often. The problem happens for turbo machines when they are driven at low rpms and treated like a kid to milk out the fuel efficinecy.. If you cant get to spin the turbo on the upshift, I suggest you downshift to engine brake and use the brake finally. This will spin the turbo to 4500rpm often.

Sometimes it helps if the ASC is far away. In my case I used to visit TAFE for very minor things as I stay in T.Nagar. Now that the ASC is far away for me, i dont think of attending anything unless it is severe. Visit the ASC only if really required. I have been getting some noise from the C pillar facade, but i ve decided to live with it and attend in the next service.Touch wood since my 60K service I have done 12K kms without a visit to ASC. Too much attention to details would involve opening well set component combinations and tooling around merely on suspicion in the process upsetting the harmony..

Try using a diesel additive once in three months atleast for a tankful and drive hard for a tankful, and reasonably hard always.

ramjn, they said that the examiner tool they have is a old one which was used at some TASS and hence it is primitive and faulty. They are waiting for the new examiner tool it seems.

My hunch is that the turbo is fine, just that there is a leak somewhere.

And anyway they have not checked boost pressures yet. To do that, the examiner tool should be connected to the car and car should be driven hard to note vital parameters. Which didn't happen due to their excuse of bad examiner tool.

Teky, yes I have the OBD2 adapter, I will hook it and look for anything obvious. And yeah, I also remember it to be very prominent in 2nd gear, but there is absolutely no action now. The car gathers speed though. I would love for the car to be TDed by you, but with my current overtime work, am not sure if I can make it to OMR. :)

@jumu: Buddy, thanks for the concern, but this was not a minor issue. The car was lacking in power and FE too. I get an FE of 14plus on the highways with my usual driving where the car used to deliver 16-17 kmpl. Add loss of power to this. This is in no way a minor issue. Also, often oil patches are seen somewhere in the system. I have personally seen it twice from the intercooler, once from the oil separator and n times from the turbo outlet pipe. Sorry sir, this is not a minor one to me. I got the service done with these folks just to solve this issue.

The VST folks just dismissed the oil near intercooler as nothing and that is what has grown to a bigger problem today. And hence am desperate to get it solved now to stop something big later on.

@DRIV3R: I don't think there is any use in you going to RDC if they don't have the right tools to solve your problem. Vecto sounds like a good alternative but I am not sure if it would be okay to drive the car all the way to Bangalore.

Turbo issues are a real pain, and explaining to service station folks about it is a bigger pain. They always try to tell us it’s a figment of our imagination. I say this because they did change our old Verna's turbo 6 times!!!! Before they realized that it wasn't a turbo issue at all and that there was leak somewhere.

On a side note: I was just reading up the reviews for Vecto motors and it sounds like even they are finding it difficult to handle the load and the next avialable appointment date is sometime in the second half of this month. Hope we see more service centers in all major cities. If they don't do something really fast your going to see a lot of complaints pouring in.
